As we inch closer to a NASCAR crown jewel this weekend, it’s a good time to reflect on the longest Coca-Cola 600 in history which was last year. That race had it all, late wrecks, lead changes, overtime, high drama, everything. But then again, there are a few drivers who wouldn’t necessarily want to revisit last year’s race. And among those few, perhaps the one who would refrain from last year’s nostalgia the most would be Tony Stewart’s driver Chase Briscoe.

A trip to the victory lane in Phoenix along with six finishes inside the top 5 and ten finishes inside the top 10, Briscoe had himself a pretty decent season in 2022. However, he could’ve had an even better season by winning the crown jewel race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, something he came agonizingly close to.

Amid an intense battle with Kyle Larson for the lead in the closing laps of the race, Briscoe, it seemed for a while, would get ahead of the 2021 Cup champion and claim his second win of the season. But then with two to go, he got loose and brought out a caution which effectively ended his bid to win the race.

This led to the overtime in which Denny Hamlin prevailed over the rest while the initial two contenders for the win, Larson and Briscoe, finished in 9th and 4th place, respectively.

Naturally, the #14 driver was pretty disappointed with himself considering he more or less “threw it away.”

As NASCAR put up the throwback post on Twitter, they didn’t exactly get the response they would have anticipated from the fans. What they ended up doing was riling up the fans against the Stewart-Haas Racing driver and his last year’s mistake.

“Thanks for ruining that Briscoe”

“There’s a reason why briscoe has never finished second in a cup race”

“Briscoe is the very definition of Checkers or Wreckers”

“Briscoe Will Briscoe though”

Even the Hendrick Motorsports driver became a target, “Absolute boneheaded move by Chase. Had 398 laps to find the limit and still willingly went over it”

Chase Briscoe admits he “threw it away” in Charlotte

Speaking in a post-race interview, Briscoe admitted that while they did struggle “really bad” leading into the crown jewel race, he did throw away an opportunity to turn their fortunes around.

“We’ve obviously struggled really bad the last month-and-a-half and to have a good car like that and had a car capable of winning and I threw it away, plain and simple,” Briscoe said as per Motorsport. “It’s unfortunate.”

“There are 100 different things I would have done differently if I could re-do it again, but obviously you’re racing in the moment and I made a mistake and went too far.”

With that said, do you think Chase Briscoe could once again contend for the win and emerge as a favorite to win the Coke 600 this year?
