With two similar run-ins in a single season, things for the drivers as well as the team got really murky. Earlier in the 2022 season, Kyle Larson led 28 of the 200 laps at the Auto Club Speedway. However, when just 21 laps were remaining, Larson rammed Elliott into the wall to climb up the track.

Then, during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International, Kyle Larson ran into Elliott once again at the final restart. The #9 driver started the round in the front row from the outside lane. However, soon AJ Allmendinger shoved Larson to the side, moving him a few inches ahead of Elliott. Taking advantage of the situation, Larson hit Elliott’s car and slid up on the track, securing his second win of the season. Overall, Larson bagged 3 wins over the course of the season whereas Elliott triumphed in 5.
