Gus Dean is riding high this week. Fresh off a dazzling victory in the Super Late Model Series at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, he’s just snagged the checkered flag at the Daytona International Speedway, kicking off the ARCA Menards Series season with a bang. But his win isn’t without its controversies.

Toni Breidinger, for one, wouldn’t bet her bottom dollar on his win. In the aftermath, Gus Dean brushed off questions about the kerfuffle that saw his teammate Breidinger bow out of the race early. He showed little interest in rehashing the incident.

Gus Dean witnesses a very special win at Daytona

Gus Dean’s win at Daytona was very special for him because he did it to honor his grandfather. He shared that he has come a long way with a lot of support, especially from his granddad who attended all his races and always encouraged him to do his best.

When talking about working with his team, Gus Dean didn’t even care to mention Toni Breidinger. He talked about how teamwork is important, especially when the race starts again after a stop. He praised his teammate Jake Finch, saying Jake will do great things in the future. But he didn’t talk about Toni Breidinger at all.

He mentioned, “He’s got a big bright future ahead of him. I just didn’t have it in me to do the teammate restart there was one to go. I had a little bit of a special reason for tonight. And I came here on one mission.” Gus said he had a special reason for racing that day and was focused on a single goal, so he didn’t work with his teammate the way he usually would. 

Well, the race was exciting, and had troubles from the beginning. Willie Mullins was in front at first, but then there was a big crash that stopped some drivers, including Toni Breidinger and Shane van Gisbergen. Shane was racing at Daytona Oval for the first time. And while there were many situations during the night, the biggest and the most hyped one was about Breidinger.

NASCAR fans and Toni Breidinger thought Dean would probably talk about her strong complaints. But surprisingly, Gus Dean decided not to get involved and stayed away from the trouble.

Toni Breidinger didn’t mince words when she aired her grievances about her teammate and the victor of the ARCA 200, Gus Dean, especially after their clash in the 2024 ARCA series. She felt Dean, who’s only dipping into the ARCA waters part-time, played a part in her and teammate Kris Wright’s premature exit from the race. 

“I mean in the truck race, people were aggressive but nobody just cleared themself down. I did the entire truck race, people were very aggressive, I don’t know, Gus is supposed to have the most experience here, supposed to be the veteran of the team. But I don’t know, I have no idea what he was doing, just a stupid move.” Breidinger expressed her frustration after the race.

Breidinger’s disappointment didn’t stop there. “I’ve not talked to him but it’s just unfortunate because he took out Kris our other teammate we’re both going full-time in the season. Gus is just pulling up for a couple of races because his dad is writing the check.”

Her words echoed the frustration of a dashed opportunity and a team dynamic strained by the events on the track.
