It’s ‘crisis mode’ engaged in NASCAR as solutions are being looked for in the middle of the whole safety crisis brought on by the Next Gen car. After weeks and weeks of the buildup of ugly incidents, nasty comments, and extreme pressure, it seems the ones in power are finally listening.

This is because recently, a crash test took place which resulted in some new measures in line with the problems at hand.

According to journalist Bob Pockrass, “The crash test Wednesday apparently went well and the changes to the rear of the car will be implemented for next year. Rear bumper structure and rear clip changes and some changes to center clip.”

However, fans weren’t really buying NASCAR’s reaction to the criticism of the Next Gen car. In fact, most of them completely disregarded the crash test and chose to point towards bigger, more long-term problems.

NASCAR legend calls out the Next Gen car’s unacceptable design

In a recent episode of Dale Jr Download, former driver Dale Earnhardt Jr opened up on his thoughts on the fundamental design of the Next Gen car. The Hall of Famer made a point that the new car isn’t suited to the sport in the first place.

“Why did we have to go this far with this design? Why did this car have to be so far removed from what we were doing, to begin with? Why did we have to jump to the other extreme? I mean we basically got a sports car running around these ovals,” he said.

“A car designed for road courses now racing at mile-and-a-half oval tracks.”

Earnhardt Jr. added that the IMSA drivers run their cars on road courses, the cars which he thinks are closer to the Next Gen car.

They don’t run around ovals with walls. They don’t smash into walls every time they spin out. And so that’s a little frustrating for me personally,” he revealed.

” I wish we hadn’t went so far away from where we were with the overall design of the car.”
