On January 19 this year, NASCAR dropped some big news: Rusty Wallace, a Hall of Famer, champion, and all-around good guy, is set to join the prestigious ranks of Buddy Shuman Award honorees. The list already includes some big names like Stu Grant from Goodyear, who snagged the award in 2021, Ed Clark, the former head honcho of Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2020, and Dover Motorsports Inc.’s own top dog, Denis McGlynn, back in 2019.

In light of Rusty Wallace’s impressive achievements, his son couldn’t help but share a touching message on Twitter, celebrating this well-deserved recognition.

It is widely known that Rusty Wallace was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2013. But what’s not as popular enough is his tireless work off the track. Since hanging up his racing gloves in 2005, Wallace has been a driving force behind The NASCAR Foundation, joining its board in 2006.

Wallace shared a memorable call with NASCAR.com in August. “(The NASCAR Foundation) has been something very, very special in my heart, and it all started back in 2006 when I got a phone call from the late Betty Jane France. And she says, ‘Well, Rusty, I want to start a foundation, and I want you to be on the board. And I said, ‘Why me?’ And she laughed and said, ‘Well, now you’re not controversial because you’re not driving any longer.’”

But that’s not all. Since 2019, Wallace has been the mastermind behind the Buffalo Chip’s Rusty Wallace Charity Ride as well. The motorcycle ride, now a staple of the renowned Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, celebrated its fifth year recently.

These acts of kindness are just a few reasons why Rusty Wallace was tapped for the Buddy Shuman Award. His son, Greg Wallace, couldn’t hide his pride on Twitter. Posting a picture of Rusty with the cup, he wrote, “Proud to be on hand tonight to witness Dad add to the trophy case as the 2023 recipient of #NASCAR’s Buddy Shuman Award! Few people care more about advancing the sport of @NASCAR and carrying out Mrs. France’s vision at the @NASCAR_FDN more than @rustywallace. Congratulations! #NASCARHOF.”

In the midst of all the Buddy Shuman Award excitement, Rusty Wallace is also steering the Buffalo Chip’s Rusty Wallace Charity Ride into new territory, planning a fresh starting and ending location for the event.

The 6th edition of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Rusty Wallace Charity Ride is taking a detour to Historic Deadwood, South Dakota, and timing its grand finale for the last Friday of the Sturgis Rally. In fact, since 2019, the ride has raised nearly $500k in donations for the NASCAR Foundation and South Dakota Special Olympics – Rapid City Flame.

Wallace himself dropped the news about the ride’s new pit stop. “This ride is always a highlight of my Sturgis trip and I’m thrilled to really switch things up this year by starting, and ending, the ride in Deadwood. I always enjoy Deadwood and it’ll be a fun time, but it’s all for the kids and the people in need. That’s why we do it, and I hope you’ll all come out and join us!”

Controversies, gossip, and breakneck speeds? Count me in! While F1 has its charm, NASCAR helps me relive those "Roadrash" gaming days. My favorite among the drivers has to be Tyler Reddick. The 23XI Racing pilot is not only likable but also a complete beast when he is on track, more specifically, road courses.
