Dale Earnhardt Jr often shares fascinating anecdotes about his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr. One memorable story was about his dad’s distaste for frogs, something the two didn’t share. This time, Dale Jr has roped in a racing veteran, who is still remembered for his dominance in the ’90s at the Nashville Superspeedway. Jeff Green, who made Cup starts in the Busch Series for Sadler Brothers, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt Inc, is at the center of this tale.

Jeff Green’s memorable encounter with Dale Earnhardt Sr

Jeff Green, who drove the #31 Chevy in 1996 and the #1 Chevy in 2003 for Dale Earnhart Sr, has had quite the career in the NASCAR world. Reflecting on his journey, Green shared a humorous story about the time he mistook a phone call from Dale Earnhardt Sr. for a prank.

Green reminisced about the moment, “Along the way, your dad was going to retire from the Busch Series, and Mike and your dad were really good friends. So, Mike was putting my name in the hat for that car for that opportunity.” Jeff went on to explain how this set the stage for an unexpected call. “I came home one night late in the ’94 season, and Michelle, my wife, hit the button, and… Earnhardt was on the other end, I thought. For the next three or four hours, I called all my buddies back in Hornsboro to see who was messing with me, but it turned out to be him for sure, and that was a pretty special occasion for me.

Dale Jr, always curious, asked, “What’d he say?” Green responded with a chuckle, “He wasn’t going to talk too much, so he said, ‘Come see me, buddy.’

This unexpected call was a big deal for Green, who was already juggling opportunities. “I drove a race for Junior Johnson that year too, at Atlanta, the last race of the year in ’94 in the Cup Series, and Junior wanted me to come work for him too. So, I had a couple of opportunities, but I felt like my heart was in the Busch Series. I felt like I needed to learn more and be more competitive each and every week, and driving that three-car, I felt like I could do that.

Jeff Green’s interaction with Dale Sr. is a reminder of how even in high-stakes racing, there’s room for unexpected, personal moments that leave a lasting impact. This leads perfectly into another humorous encounter, this time involving Dale Jr himself and his dad, in the middle of the night.

Shifting gears to another humorous tale, Dale Jr shared a unique experience from his childhood. “I was around 10 or 11 years old, staying at my dad’s house, sleeping soundly in the middle of the night until I heard some sizzling coming from the kitchen. I got up to see what was going on because no one was usually up at this hour and saw my dad standing there in pajamas frying up some frog legs.
