With the NASCAR Cup Series heading into the penultimate race of the playoffs, the stakes only get higher. While Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell have booked their place for the finale, the competition for the other two spots is going to get intense at Martinsville. Without a doubt, Martin Truex Jr has been impressive at the track, but somehow the odds aren’t quite in his favor.

After an amazing time in the regular season, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver was expected to continue with his stellar form. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. In fact, he has struggled more often than not and is in a do-or-die situation on the weekend.

Martin Truex Jr isn’t considered a massive threat at Martinsville Speedway

Given Martin Truex Jr and his capabilities behind the wheel, it was hardly surprising how he succeeded in winning the 2023 regular season. However, what happened thereafter isn’t quite what Joe Gibbs or his team expected. Since the start of the playoffs, only once has he finished in the top 10.

While that is a shocking dip in form, it is the bitter truth. Safe to say, he has required some fortune to end up in the round of 8. Having said that, he will need some more luck during the race at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday as he lies 17 points below the cutoff line.

The 0.526-mile track at Virginia has been a productive one for Truex Jr so far. In 35 races, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has won thrice and registered 10 top-five and 16 top-ten finishes. While this should certainly boost his morale, he wouldn’t be quite happy with what experts have to say about his chances.

Speaking on the Dirty Mo Dough podcast, NASCAR veteran Steve Letarte discussed Truex Jr and his current form. It was then that the well-known analyst ‘The Professor’ criticized the #19 driver. He said, “Well, he stinks lately. Let’s put it that way.” This comes as a bit of a shocker given Truex Jr’s terrific record at Martinsville.

To justify it, ‘The Professor’  pointed out how the 43-year-old has finished 22nd, 20th, and 3rd in the next-gen car at the track. However, he also added that it was more about Truex Jr’s poor form that doesn’t encourage many to gamble on him.

Regardless of what others have to say, the New Jersey-born driver remains optimistic about his chances.

Truex Jr hopeful of creating “old magic” at Martinsville Speedway

There is no doubt that Martin Truex Jr hasn’t found it easy in the playoffs. But let’s not forget, it just takes a race to turn things around and Martinsville Speedway could just be the track for the JGR driver. The 2017 Cup Series champion looked very positive while speaking to the media going into the weekend.

Truex Jr said, “I’m really optimistic going into this weekend because we ran third there in the spring. Martinsville looks so easy – it’s just a small, little half-mile track, but it’s so tricky with the concrete in the corners, and every time you go there, it’s different.”

In fact, he is optimistic about bringing success as he did a few years back. Truex Jr said, “It doesn’t make sense because the track is the same, but it does make it different depending on the temperature and the tire and everything that’s going on with these cars. Running third there in the spring, I think we learned a lot we can use going forward and, hopefully, we can find some of that old magic we had there a few years ago again this weekend.”

Given how confident and motivated Truex Jr is, it certainly promises to be an exciting race. While he has five other drivers to compete with, he will have to be most wary of his JGR teammate Denny Hamlin, who also has an impressive record at the track. Who do you think has a better chance of winning on the weekend? Let us know in the comments below.
