Having clinched victory in the prestigious “Go Bowling at The Glen” race at Watkins Glen, the maestro behind the wheel of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 of HMS has ascended to the pinnacle of the playoff standings. In a tableau where numerous iconic figures of the sport failed to etch their names, this triumph is undoubtedly a feather in his cap.

It wouldn’t be off the mark to suggest that even the legendary Kevin Harvick would be over the moon with the HMS driver’s triumph; the latter’s coup d’état on the track breathed new life into Harvick’s final season.

“We’ve struggled on the road courses,” admits Kevin Harvick after finishing 21st at Watkins Glen

While the tapestry of 2023 hasn’t unfurled as gloriously as Kevin Harvick might have envisioned for his swansong season, he has, against the odds, secured a berth in the playoffs predicated upon accumulated points. While he did have a handful of top-tier finishes, this season, one could argue, might not be etched in the hallowed halls of his illustrious racing chronicles.

However, echoing the sentiment that every cloud has a silver lining, Harvick, albeit without a victory under his belt this year, finds himself ensconced within the esteemed top-16. This favorable twist of fate is largely attributed to William Byron‘s dazzling fifth series triumph. Had Lady Luck smiled upon a greenhorn at Watkins Glen, the narrative of Harvick’s 2023 season might have diverged onto a more somber path.

As per forxsports.com, in reflecting upon his SHR team’s overall 2023 regular-season Cup Series performance, Harvick admitted, “I wish we could have won a race before now, but we’ve had our opportunities to win a few of them. We’ve struggled on the road courses. Other than that, the season has been OK.”

Harvick, the luminary who clinched the 2014 Cup, undoubtedly harbored loftier aspirations for this regular season. But why did Kevin Harvick seem so pessimistic about the impending playoff despite making the cut?

What could be dampening Kevin Harvick’s spirits vis-à-vis the impending playoffs?

Despite conceding that both he and his team have grappled with the inherent challenges of road courses, the road to piercing the upper echelons of the top-12 or top-8 during the playoffs would require nothing short of a Herculean effort from them.

The Cup Series, in its current edition, has witnessed a pantheon of only 13 distinct victors. Bolstered by a comfortable 135-point buffer above the threshold, Harvick’s entry into the postseason is set in stone. However, his sentiments, when cast under the discerning gaze of Bob Pockrass from Fox Sports, crossed a fraction of trepidation regarding the forthcoming championship season.

To Bob’s incisive query about the playoff stratagems, Harvick opined with characteristic candor, “I don’t know. We just got to get our cars running better to really do anything.”

Yet, one is prompted to ask, Why this emphasis on ameliorating the cars? Especially when Ford’s recent racing tapestry has been marked by conspicuous successes. A case in point is a driver from his RFK team, Chris Buescher, who clinched back-to-back two victories using an analogous model.
