Since he retired from racing, Dale Earnhardt Jr has arguably become more prominent and popular in NASCAR. He not only excelled in his racing career but is also doing the same as a broadcaster and as a host of his podcast. With the legacy of brilliant race car drivers such as his father Dale Earnhardt Sr and grandfather Ralph Earnhardt, on his shoulders, he has certainly lived up to it. Now, having spent more than two decades in racing, the former Hendrick Motorsports driver found his name shining in NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers list. And who better than his former crew chief for HMS, Steve Letarte, to present him with this honor?

Letarte joined Dale Jr and co-host Mike Davis at the Dirty Mo Media studio for the surprise announcement. But while having some fun, something Dale Jr said led Letarte to give out a warning to him.

What did Dale Earnhardt Jr do to get the warning?

After the surprise announcement by Letarte, Dale Jr along with Mike Davis, got into a fun conversation. Davis suggested they play a game to see how well Dale Jr knows his ex-crew chief. Letarte asked the first question, “All right, what are the names of my children?” As soon as the question was thrown at Dale Jr he said, “Oh my God” because he couldn’t recall their names at first. Both Davis and Letarte were having a good laugh. Looking at Dale Jr, Letarte reminded him that this was an easy question to start with.

Dale Jr then remembered the name of Letarte’s son, Tyler. Enjoying seeing Dale Jr in such a spot, he said, “I love this, I love this” and reminded him, “I got two, I love this, this is so good.”

Dale Jr who looked worried, as he could not recall the other name, said, “I’m gonna be so mad at myself.” As soon as he said that, Letarte warned him, “Oh yeah wait till she texts you, she will be like” he enacted his wife’s voice and said, “I can’t believe it!”

After everyone had a good laugh and Dale Jr gave up, Letarte reveals his daughter’s name, Ashlyn. But the look on Dale Jr’s face all this while was hilarious.

It indeed was a proud moment for Dale Jr as his name got included in NASCAR’s list of 75 Greatest Drivers. However, the way Letarte surprised him with his news was brilliant. He asked Dale Jr to just sit tight and smile at the table where they were shooting, while he called someone to get the box. He announced by saying, “So this is on behalf of NASCAR. The panel and all of the fans officially letting you know that you are going to join your grandfather Ralph, your father Dale as one of the greatest 75 drivers in the first 75 years in NASCAR.”

We could see a lot of emotions on Dale Jr’s face at that moment. It was a moment he will cherish forever, as he now shares the same list as his father and grandfather. Letarte appreciated the driver and shared that Dale Jr receiving this honor was very special to him. He said, “This is purely what you did behind the wheel. 24 wins in Xfinity, two-time Champion, back to back 26 wins at the cup level with two Daytona 500s.”
