Here’s What Happened in the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Race at the Charlotte Roval

Back during the 2019 Bank of America Roval 400 in the NASCAR Cup Series, Chase Elliott pulled off an epic comeback to win. In the early stages of the race, he made a huge mistake on a restart and plummeted down the order to nearly dead last.

However, with a new fire in his eyes, he fought his way back up the field to win at Charlotte. In doing so, he snatched his third win of the season, as well as his second road course triumph after Watkins Glen.

On lap 64, he led the race on a restart, until he out-braked himself and overshot Turn 1 on the roval. Elliott went headfirst into the tire barrier and brought out a caution while he pitted for repairs.

“Holy moly. You talk about messing something up, right here,” he declared after the race.

“We had such a fast NAPA Camaro ZL1 and honestly, that was the only reason we were able to get back in. I pretty well blew it; and got the cautions at the right time, and brought it home.”

It was a fine day at the office for Hendrick Motorsports, with Alex Bowman in 2nd, William Byron in 6th, and Jimmie Johnson in 9th. To make matters sweeter for Bowman, he raced in a backup car after a crash in practice.

What else took place during the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series race at the Roval?

As it turned out, Bowman collided with Austin Dillon and Bubba Wallace in the opening laps. Later on, Wallace earned Bowman’s wrath when they collided for a second time. Owing to this, it led to a confrontation between the two drivers after the race.

“I got flipped off for every single straightaway for three laps, flipped off by (Wallace) for like three or four laps in a row at Richmond, so I’m just over it,” Bowman said. “He probably wouldn’t have got wrecked if he had his finger back in the car, right?”

Unfortunately, this race spelled disaster for Ryan Newman, Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch, and Erik Jones. The quartet failed to make the cut and got eliminated from the playoffs.

Newman came awfully close but missed a chicane with two laps remaining. Of course, Newman also lost his temper, owing to an on-track incident with Daniel Suarez.
