“He’s Represented That 24 Team Extremely Well”: Jeff Gordon Praises William Byron for His Daytona Win

William Byron had big shoes to fill as he joined the No. 24 team at Hendrick Motorsports. Legendary driver Jeff Gordon left behind a legacy that would be too hard to follow.

William Byron lived up to his bidding and showed what he can do in the Cup Series. He bagged a win when it mattered the most, at the Daytona International Speedway over the weekend.

Jeff Gordon believes this is just the start of a successful road ahead for William Byron. The four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion wore a proud look as he offered his thoughts on Byron’s win.

Jeff Gordon speaks highly of William Byron

“When that 24 crossed the line first, thinking about his race and the way he performed that night. Chad Knaus being a part of that. Seeing a young man, William Byron just how his career has progressed definitely put a big smile on my face,” Gordon said in an interview.

“I didn’t think about the significance of the No. 24 going to victory lane, but I was certainly very proud. He’s represented that 24 team extremely well. So you’re always excited to see a young guy like that, who has a bright future, get that first win,” Gordon expressed.

Gordon, who has 93 Cup wins, said that it is easy to expect so much from a talented driver like William Byron. But what is usually forgotten is his meteoric rise to the Cup Series and that he still has a lot to learn.

Once he does, Gordon believes Byron is capable of great success and lauded his resilience in tough situations.

“If you look at the moments when he had to step up. When he won that championship in the Xfinity car in those final laps. And now to be able to capitalize on this moment at Daytona. The way he avoided that wreck, that was incredible.

To hold off some very very fierce competitors on a night that had so much weight on it. I think that speaks volumes of what this guy, this kid, I call him a kid (laughs) is capable of,” he added.

Gordon went on to say that he expects a strong show from Byron in the playoffs. Words of praise from one of the most successful drivers ever will certainly hold Byron in good stead.
