Towards the end of the seemingly never-ending race at the Circuit of The Americas this past Sunday, Ross Chastain did an interesting thing. He fooled NASCAR, took advantage of it, and got a good result in the end. But this was something that didn’t go unnoticed by some, including Bubba Wallace‘s spotter as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr’s co-host Mike Davis.

In a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, it was Wallace’s spotter, Freddie Kraft, who bought Chastain’s actions toward the end of the race to light.

“Ross in lap 61 was backward in turn 1, waited and drew a caution which probably should be addressed,” Kraft claimed. “He sat there forever, they threw the caution finally, and then he fired up and drove away.

“And then 10 laps later he’s got a top 5 out of it,” he added.

Later, it was this point that Junior’s co-host Mike Davis highlighted to make a bigger point.

Dale Jr’s co-host Mike Davis calls out Chastain’s clever maneuver

In an episode of the Dale Jr. Download, Davis pointed towards the yellow which was thrown because of Chastain‘s car which was parked on Turn 1. Davis also referenced Kraft’s aforementioned point to argue that the #1 driver stayed there intentionally, and when the safety car came, he drove off.

“I’m just saying Denny Hamlin was penalized for manipulating the race. Ross Chastain, that was 10 to go. He stayed on the lead lap. He finishes in the top 5 because of other restarts and stuff,” he described. “How is that not manipulating the race?

“And in the race report, it says that the caution was thrown because the #1 car stopped in Turn 1.”

This was something for which Dale Earnhardt Jr suggested that NASCAR look at the telemetry data, which will make it clear whether he was trying to fire up the car or what exactly he was trying to do with the car.

“NASCAR has that information, that data, to be able to tell. It’s a great point to bring up Mike,” Junior added.

The Hall of Famer claimed NASCAR would have to look at the whole situation and assess it properly. “There it is, the #1 car stops on the racetrack which brings out the yellow. So NASCAR again is throwing the yellow for the right reason, they got a car sitting there on the racetrack, backwards in Turn 1.

That was the moment where the s**t hit the fan,” Dale Jr said.

He argued that while drivers were largely responsible for the end of the race in COTA, he still remains partial to the drivers.

Don’t put me in that box, don’t take me to the toy store telling me not to touch anything,” Junior added.
