With the furor surrounding the NASCAR Cup Series and the playoff standings, it’s easy to miss all that is happening at the NASCAR Xfinity Series 2023. The Xfinity race that took place at the Glen was the 23rd race of the season. JR Motorsports owner Dale Earnhardt Jr and his associate Mike Davis tuned in to discuss the ins and outs of the sporting event.

Although Sam Mayer’s #1 Chevrolet Camaro won the race, it was Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer that drew their particular attention.

In the latest episode of The Dale Jr. Download podcast, Junior and Davis discussed Custer’s performance. Custer’s lack of control in the race especially irked Davis, who said, “You wanna know who frustrated me in that race the most? Cole Custer! He was running over everybody, in everything. Running off the I mean in the bus stop where you were I mean yeah he then he caused the wreck that out Allgaier, yeah took out Allgaier there towards the end I mean Allgaier was right there so yeah Cole Custer seemed like he was in over his keys.”

Junior agreeing with Davis said, “That that s*cked, watching it turn around… Holy smokes! Yeah that was disappointing.”

Evidently, Dale Earhardt Jr does not understand the decisions taken by Custer this season. Although he won at the Chicago Street Course and at the Portland International Raceway, Junior seems perplexed by his attitude. He added, “He kinda made some odd decisions this year. Kinda like ‘I don’t give a damn’ in some moments…Definitely the impression I get. He seems like he’s kinda in this like you know what, tis what it is, sorry.”

However, Tony Stewart does not need to hear about more driver issues this year. What with Kevin Harvick retiring and Aric Almirola struggling this season. Unfortunately, he has even bigger problems to deal with than uncertainty about drivers.

Custer’s race wins are the least of Stewart’s worries. Custer and the team were both penalised with L-1 penalties, leading to loss of series and playoff points. The penalties were determined at the Xfinity race at Michigan International Speedway for violating car rules. This comes at the foot of a series of penalties the entire year, most notably with Chase Briscoe at the Coca Cola 600. Even with significant crew changes, things are not looking up for Stewart-Haas Racing.

In these circumstances, the possibility of Ford ending their partnership is stirring already troubled waters. The performance dip is making Ford search for greener pastures. In a season filled with driver shuffling, team replacements and increasing penalties, every driver and race counts. Consequently, Stewart is definitely relying upon Custer when it comes to the Xfinity series.
