NASCAR drivers can come from any part of the country, or in the case of Daniel Suarez, beyond US borders. However, the state of Arkansas was not exactly known for being a hotbed of motor-racing talent. Luckily, one of the most well-known names to come out from that state is none other than Mark Martin. The 5-time Cup Series runner-up had been in the sport for a long time, racking up 40 Cup wins in his career.

Of course, he has admirers hailing from his hometown, namely ARCA Series driver Matt Wilson. Wilson is one of five known NASCAR drivers from Arkansas. Aside from himself and Hall-of-Famer Mark Martin, Parnelli Jones, Rob Morgan, and Cole Rouse were Arkansas natives. Furthermore, the 37-year-old Wilson also has another reason to compete, his daughter.

Wilson once admitted to the media, “To race in NASCAR, like one of those series, I don’t know of anybody other than Mark. I mean I get to check that off my list of things I want to do in life and then I get to be her hero beyond just being her dad.”

What lies ahead for the ARCA driver on the road to NASCAR?

In 2022, Wilson made his ARCA Series debut, running in three ARCA Series races. Unfortunately, he was forced to withdraw from the first race at the Kansas Speedway. Fortunately, he got another shot at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and returned to Kansas once again later in the season. At Charlotte, he finished in a respectable 12th place and was 14th at Kansas. In the same year, he competed in one ARCA Series East race at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and finished in a fine 9th.

Now, he will be hoping to get more races in the ARCA Series or progress to the more senior categories. The big question is, will he continue to run on a part-time basis or pursue a full-time gig? It must also be kept in mind that he is 37 years old, so he is not exactly in the prime of his career.
