Caution. Restart. Caution. Restart. Caution. Restart. This is how Sunday’s EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix concluded at the Circuit of The Americas. Going into triple overtime, the race was quite frustrating for NASCAR drivers and fans alike. Although the viewers were glad to see Kyle Busch battle Sunday’s champion Tyler Reddick at the last restart, the multiple overtimes were quite unnerving for many.
But now, it seems like there might finally be a solution to it all. Or at least Bubba Wallace’s spotter feels there is. In the recent episode of Door Bumper Clear, ‘COTA: Still Restarting Probably,’ Freddie Kraft suggested a ‘simple fix’ for the issues faced at COTA.
He said, “It’s a simple fix and it’s not going to be very popular. No green-white checkers. Get rid of them. I hate them. You know, for one, you’re changing the essence of the race. Two, this is what we get. It used to be worse ’cause it used to have limited. There’ll be three. So, now if you knew that there would be a third one, all bets are off.”

Prior to Kraft, a similar discussion about the issues posed by the Green-White-Checkered rule was heralded by NASCAR fans after last month’s race at Daytona. In fact, Dale Earnhardt Jr also admitted that the rule had a ‘profound effect on my enjoyment of racing.’
Freddie Kraft discusses how the rule affected Kyle Busch and his possible win
This is not the first time that the Green-White-Checkered rule and Kyle Busch crossed paths. During last month’s Daytona 500 race, Busch candidly admitted that he might have won the race had it been for the 1998 racing rules. Having led the 200th lap, the Richard Childress Racing driver could not seize the day after a last-lap wreck swept him away.
While discussing Kyle Busch and his battle with Tyler Reddick on the last lap at COTA, Freddie Kraft shared, “If Kyle Busch knew that the last restart yesterday was the last restart…you know that’s the third attempt and I know if the caution comes out, the race is over…he’s just gonna go in that corner and clean Tyler Reddick out.”
“Come off of one with a lead, yellow’s out potentially. Either he has a lead or the others had, and he has won the race.”

Does Freddie Kraft want to get rid of the rule entirely?
During the conversation, the podcast’s co-host Casey Boat asked Freddie Kraft if he wanted to get rid of green-white-checkered for everything or just for road courses like COTA.
To this, the NASCAR spotter replied, “I am okay for getting rid of (the flags) for everything. I know that’s not popular, but you look at how much s**t we tear up every time we do green-white checkers. Millions of dollars worth of equipment gets torn up.
“The guy that dominates the race half the time doesn’t win because a lot of people see ‘I can’t beat this guy heads up so this is my only chance on a green-white-checker to run through the back of them or run off the race track or do something different.’ They have to get a chance ’cause they can’t beat him heads up.”

The Green-White-Checkered rule was implemented to ensure a better racing experience for the audience. However, now, many see this to be an inconvenience rather than something having a positive impact. With a myriad of opinions on the subject, it seems like the governing body must take an initiative to have an open discussion on the topic.
