For those not familiar with NASCAR, the significance of diecasts to a fan might not be immediately apparent. These miniatures, sometimes fetching up to $300, are more than just collectibles; they’re symbols of a deep-rooted passion for the sport. A recent event highlighted this devotion, capturing the attention of Bubba Wallace. It involved a NASCAR insider whose impressive collection of #23 diecast cars caused quite a stir in the racing community.

Adding to the intrigue is the puzzle surrounding the collection’s existence, especially after the public announcement made by Denny Hamlin, concerning NASCAR’s official diecast partner, Lionel Racing. Despite Hamlin’s declaration to exclude his team 23XI from the lineup, the existence of such a collection raises some eyebrows and curiosity. How did this collection come to be?

A devoted Bubba Wallace fan flaunts an enviable diecast collection

A dedicated NASCAR enthusiast and admirer of Bubba Wallace, Duke Smith, recently took to Twitter to showcase a remarkable array of Wallace’s #23 diecasts. His tweet, which featured a collage of the diecasts in various paint schemes neatly encased, read, “Oh just a few custom @BubbaWallace diecast to help complete the collection. Every cup car produced, with a few customs thrown in.” Notably, this impressive collection even includes the special Black Lives Matter paint scheme diecast that Wallace drove at Martinsville Speedway in 2020.

Wallace, who himself has a soft spot for collectibles like helmets, couldn’t help but notice this extraordinary collection. He reshared Smith’s post, expressing his admiration with, “Incredible. Since day 1…appreciate you DS!”

What really piques curiosity here, however, is the backstory of this collection. Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing, had publicly requested in early October that Lionel Racing, NASCAR’s long-time diecast partner, exclude 23XI team cars from their ‘Authentics’ line. When a fan probed Hamlin on Twitter about this decision, he explained that the team preferred not to feature in mass retail. He further clarified, upon another fan’s inquiry, that it was a branding decision, related to their sponsors’ policies on mass retail exposure.
