Joey Logano’s frustration: Stranded four times in a year and a half

With a hint of amusement, Team Penske driver recalled the hot mic incident from last week. Still, his laughter gave way to a serious tone as he discussed the troubling issue plaguing the sport: repeated flat tires. Logano did not mince words when he expressed frustration over being stranded four times in the past year and a half due to flat tires.

“It’s not fair to the safety workers it’s not fair to the racers um that to be put in that spot to where just flat tires can ruin your day it’s happened to me like I said that’s the fourth time. It’s happened to probably every single driver in a garage it’s a broken system something is wrong we need to figure out a way to do it better,” Logano stated.

Following the Pocono 400 race, Joey Logano had expressed frustration over the recovery procedure used when his car suffered a wreck, and all four tires blew out. At Pocono, Logano had found himself in a heated altercation with track workers as he argued for a more efficient and safer recovery process. While the incident was initially tense, Logano later spoke about the matter with NASCAR officials, and they assured him that they would work to find a practical solution.

NASCAR’s response: Acknowledging the need for improvements

NASCAR’s Senior Vice President, Elton Sawyer, acknowledged the need for improvements in the recovery process and mentioned that the organization would brainstorm alternative methods. However, he also highlighted their challenges in dealing with various scenarios during the races, especially at superspeedways where multiple vehicles could be stranded with flat tires simultaneously.

The 2018 NASCAR Cup champion’s complaint centered around being towed for two miles after the incident, which he found uncomfortable and dangerous with his head bouncing around inside the car. He proposed a simple fix that involves equipping chase vehicles with the necessary tools like tires, jacks, and impacts of changing tires on-site, enabling drivers to return to the pits without being dragged around the racetrack.

With Logano’s feedback, there is hope that the sport will improve its recovery procedures to benefit drivers and trackside workers.

I've climbed peaks and witnessed breathtaking vistas, and at the same time, I've written articles that garnered admiration from fellow racing enthusiasts.
