“I’ve Been Noticed a Handful of Times”- Kyle Larson on “Pretty Cool” Differences Between Life in Arizona and Life in Charlotte

Charlotte is really the home of all racing in the United States. The city has the NASCAR HQ, and the place to be if you want to be a race car driver in the states. In fact, it surprised Kyle Larson when he moved out of Charlotte.

It turns out there are so many drivers in Charlotte that it is tough for him to get noticed.

Earlier in November 2022, Kyle Larson splurged and bought a multi-million-dollar mansion in Arizona. $5.6 Million to be exact, on a 5,600 Square Foot estate in Scottsdale. But this is an addition to his North Carolina home. So maybe the Scottsdale mansion is more of a getaway home.

But he had a pretty interesting experience being a racecar driver in North Carolina versus Arizona. Especially in the sense that it was often just not a big deal.

“Charlotte, there’s so many race car drivers there that, like, even if somebody knows you, they’ve probably seen three or four other drivers throughout the day too,” said Larson. “So they’re not like coming up and asking for a picture or anything. So it’s not really a big deal to get seen in Charlotte area. But, I feel like whenever I fly, you know, commercial. I’ll get noticed at least once, maybe walking through the airport.”

How does that compare to Arizona for Kyle Larson?

Arizona doesn’t have the racing culture Carolina has. Maybe that’s why Larson chose to get a house there. But he has been caught off guard as he explained, “I’ve been surprised honestly. Being out here in Arizona. Yeah, I’ve been noticed a handful of times.”

Larson even recalled a story where someone knew who he was. He said, “I just recently, like last week, like at a stoplight, there’s a like construction worker guy pulled it next to me, like glance over. He does like a double-take and pulls his phone out. Going to Lowe’s here in Arizona, going to Ace Hardware, like when you go to where you go to places like that, people recognize you.”

Larson added, “But. Yeah. It’s just I don’t know. It’s pretty honestly being out here like normally. I feel like when you go to when you’re in North Carolina, like when you’re in a racing-ish area, you’re like it’s not that impressive to be noticed. But being here in Arizona and Scottsdale, it’s like I would not [have] thought that there were people that pay attention to NASCAR enough to recognize me in normal street clothes. So that part that was pretty cool.”
