“It’s been an incredible ride, and we’re just getting started,” said the 74-year-old Rick Hendrick, commemorating his team’s ruby anniversary after a stellar start to the 2024 campaign. What started with five employees in a 5000-foot rented space in 1984 is now one of NASCAR’s most winningest teams, carrying the pride of every major statistical record at NASCAR’s top level, including pole positions, top-10 finishes, top-fives, and laps led.

2024 marks 40 years of Hendrick Motorsports which is celebrating its anniversary with several public-facing initiatives. The yearlong ruby anniversary celebration will include special paint schemes, fan events, and a line of Chevrolet Camaro street cars, including a Chevy Camaro specially designed as per Mr. H’s liking.

4-time Cup Series champion, Jeff Gordon gave a brief description of the Cherry Red Camaro to popular YouTuber, AutomotiveWoman, revealing how one lucky fan will stand to win one of these limited edition cars out of the lot of 40.

40 for 40 – Hendrick Motorsports commemorates its four decades of legacy; giving fans a one-off opportunity before the Camaro bows out of production

All in all, there are 14 championship titles in HMS’ trophy room and all-time records of 301 points-paying race victories. Unlike other rival teams in its four decades in the promotion, Hendrick Motorsports has made the most of its time, becoming one of the if not the most dominating teams in the history of NASCAR. During the 2024 NASCAR season, the team is celebrating its 40th anniversary season. And commemorating its glory, the team and officials have massive plans this year.

This year, a limited line of Hendrick Motorsports 40th Anniversary Edition Chevrolet Camaro street cars will be sold exclusively through select Hendrick Automotive Group Chevrolet dealerships. This development comes in months after Chevy confirmed that it’ll pull the plugs of its iconic muscle car, the Camaro.

Prepared by HMS engineers, the cars will feature a radiant red tint coat color, a custom graphics package with the national flag across its hood, 40th-anniversary branding, and a unique owner’s kit with an invitation for a behind-the-scenes tour of the team’s facilities. Only 40 of the cars will be produced by Hendrick Motorsports and Gordon has confirmed many have already gone under booking.

In addition to this, one lucky fan will be able to win one of these cars, through the Ally “Win Your Wheels” sweepstakes fueled by HendrickCars.com. Fans can enter to win the 40th Anniversary Edition Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE by submitting an entry online at Ally.com/sweepstakes/nascar. People can also enter the contest by visiting the Ally Fan Zone at Daytona International Speedway.

HMS’ “pivotal race” that saved its skin and Gordon’s contribution to the team’s legacy

Founded in 1984 from a humble background, Rick Hendrick knew well that the road ahead would be rough. Before the race at Martinsville Speedway on April 29, 1984, Hendrick was considering closing up operations due to financial constrictions. Reflecting on this, Mr. Hendrick said, “That was a pivotal race. We had decided to shut the doors because we didn’t have a sponsor and couldn’t go any further. (Crew chief) Harry (Hyde) said, ‘Hey, Geoff (Bodine) is good at Martinsville (Speedway). Let’s go to that race. We won that and got a sponsor, Northwestern Security Life and then later Levi Garrett came on. It was that close to this place not being here. You just think back on those moments in time. It was so close to there not being a Hendrick Motorsports.”

The win that day propelled the team into the limelight, getting them a much-needed sponsor with Geoff Bodine breathing life into the downtrodden team. Then comes Gordon’s contribution in 1995, winning the team’s first-ever championship.

Gordon was the first driver to win a championship for the Hall of Fame team owner, 11 seasons after the organization made its debut under the banner of All-Star Racing in 1984.
