Legacy Motor Club was up the creek without a paddle when they suspended Noah Gragson on August 5 after his reaction to George Floyd?s death meme on Instagram. The pot was already boiling since none of their drivers had clinched a playoff spot, and to add insult to injury, they were down one driver. The straw came after Gragson violated Section 4.4.D. of the NASCAR Rule Book related to member conduct. This left LMC in a tight spot with no alternatives.

However, the cavalry arrived in the form of Jimmie Johnson, who stepped up to the plate, unveiling his pick to fill the shoes of the No. 42 driver, originally slated to sub in for Martin Truex Jr. In a heart-to-heart with Andrew Kurland on ‘Dirty Mo Media’, the owner of Legacy Motor Club shed light on the fast-track solution to the Gragson gap and the key factors that drove the decision.

Jimmie Johnson’s remarks regarding the selection of Noah Gragson’s successor

As of now, the racetrack sees Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing as the sole standard-bearers for Toyota, with Legacy M.C. gearing up to join the fray. Given Legacy’s potential shift from Chevrolet to Toyota in 2024, they had their eyes peeled for someone who’s already in tune with Toyota’s tune-up.

Step in the No. 20 Xfinity driver from Joe Gibbs Racing, the front-runner with a whopping five wins, with the playoffs just knocking at the door. Legacy Motor Club announced on Wednesday, in what many already saw coming, that John Hunter Nemechek would be taking the wheel of the No. 42 car in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2024.

When probed about his take on roping in Nemechek, the seven-time Cup champ Jimmie Johnson unveiled, “When we needed a driver, the opportunity John Hunter really didn?t seem within reach; it really appeared that he was in line for the 19 car if Martin Truex wasn?t going to return.”

Delving deeper, Johnson added, “Then obviously on that side, winning as many races as he has and really controlling the points that he has. He has got both sides covered, and I think he is a great fit for us, and I feel like we have a lot of growing to do as a company and organization to provide the best opportunities for our drivers.”

Johnson also tipped his hat to Hunter’s commendable conduct, both in the cockpit and outside. He’s been all praise for Hunter’s journey, admiring his growth behind the wheel and his savvy business dealings off the track. Furthermore, touching upon the lightning speed at which the ink dried on the contract, Johnson’s sentiments echoed more than just his fondness for Nemechek.

Martin Truex Jr. was the linchpin in Nemechek’s deal with LMC

When the host, Andrew Kurland, tried to get to the bottom of how such a swift decision was made, landing John Hunter Nemechek in the No. 42 car in the blink of an eye, Jimmie Johnson pointed out that the first piece of the puzzle was Martin’s renewed allegiance to Joe Gibbs Racing, as LMC was eyeing on Truex Jr.

As per Johnson, though the path wasn’t without its bumps, once Truex Jr. solidified his stance with JGR, everything else fell into place like dominoes.
