In 2021, Jimmie Johnson will close his NASCAR chapter and start his IndyCar chapter. Of course, he is keen to finish the 2020 season on a high note, despite not being in the playoffs.

As it turns out, the 45-year-old is set to race with Chip Ganassi Racing on a 2-year deal. Obviously, Johnson is not a complete novice in open-wheel racing, as he has had a few tests.

The NASCAR veteran will compete in a select number of races in the coming season. As it turns out, this also includes the possibility of competing in the prestigious Indianapolis 500.

Recently, he attended an IndyCar race and spoke about the prospect of him racing at the Indy 500 in 2021. Jimmie Johnson said, “I’m gonna keep a close eye on things next year. I really have a desire to run on a road course, since its kind of on my bucket list. Of course, running here on the Oval would be a dream come true, but I just want to get my mind around the safety. I don’t need to take any unneeded risk at this part of my life.”

The 7-time Cup Series champion has set a target of 12-13 races in his first season. Truthfully, this will be a massive learning curve for the soon-to-be-former Hendrick Motorsports driver. Tests are one thing, but actual racing conditions are a whole different ball game.

Speaking about the test, it was his third attempt at getting a successful run in the car. This is largely because the COVID-19 pandemic forced the test’s cancellation on two occasions. At last, Jimmie Johnson got third time lucky and finally had his first taste of IndyCar machinery.

The NASCAR veteran will partner Scott Dixon at the Chip Ganassi Racing team. In addition to that, there are even chances that the 45-year-old could participate in a handful of NASCAR races.
