Jimmie Johnson’s Club of Drivers had a new addition at the beginning of 2024. John Hunter Nemechek marked a new beginning as he entered Legacy Motor Club this season. He flagged off his second stint as a full-time Cup driver after his brief engagement in 2020. Nemechek descended to the Craftsman Truck Series in 2021, but slowly carved his way back to the top.

Now that he is back in NASCAR’s top tier again, the No. 42 Toyota driver is working on charming his fans. Nemechek scored a top-ten finish in the season-opening Daytona race. This was followed by an impressive 6th place finish in the tire strategy race of Bristol. Now Nemechek is working on an off-track project for the silver screen. And fans have reacted with astonishment.

Jimmie Johnson’s stud is diverting from the theme

NASCAR and Hollywood’s collaboration harks back to the distant past. One of the early reel depictions of the motorsport was in 1972 when Richard Petty acted in a family biofilm. ‘43: The Petty Story’ was a semi-documentary about how Lee Petty created Petty Enterprises in 1949. Critics denounced the film as amateurish, sporting various plot holes.

The King shot to stardom again with ‘Cars’ in 2006, a high-octane delight embedded with humor, action, and heartfelt drama. Fast forward to this year, NASCAR is expanding its global reach with the Netflix show ‘NASCAR: Full Speed’.

Jimmie Johnson has not acted in a Hollywood movie. But in 2008, when Johnson was in his prime, he was compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘The Terminator’. The seven-time Cup Series champion was linked to “a seemingly unstoppable cyborg assassin.”

But the common thing about all these NASCAR-Hollywood relations is the theme, which is racing. Jimmie Johnson’s driver is seeking to change that. John Hunter Nemechek’s reel debut will be an off-track one, dwelling upon a natural calamity. Nemechek will be starring in ‘Twisters’, a spinoff from the 1996 film.

NASCAR fans express shock at Nemechek’s career twist

Although Jimmie Johnson’s star scored two top-ten finishes this season, his other Cup races were dismal. Mostly scoring outside the top 20, John Hunter Nemechek is fumbling for the mojo that got him 13 Xfinity wins. So taking a dig at his slumping fortunes, one fan justified his acting debut: “JHN has been pretending to be a competitive nascar driver so -”

As we are fast approaching mid-season, it is time for race rumors to run wild. Thus one fan commented on Nemechek’s update while hailing the beginning of NASCAR’s Silly Season. “John Hunter Nemechek pursing an acting career? Silly season is getting wilder by the hour”.

But John Hunter Nemechek is not the only one to star in a natural disaster film. Brad Keselowski previously acted in ‘Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!’, a fictitious movie about shark-studded tornadoes. One fan had his take on that: “Well, we know what happened to the last NASCAR driver that starred in a movie involving tornadoes…”
