As the ink dried on the highly anticipated news of Denny Hamlin renewing ties with JGR, the air was thick with jubilation, both from the corridors of the team and its stalwarts, Joe Gibbs and the man of the hour, Denny Hamlin. While the initial playoff race might not have been a feather in Hamlin’s cap, this renewed bond with JGR promises to put the wind back in his sails.

The celebratory ambiance echoed in Hamlin’s recent podcast as well, where none other than the captain of the JGR ship, Joe Gibbs, graced the airwaves. He unfurled lesser-known tales about Denny Hamlin, offering listeners a peek behind the curtain into the racer’s illustrious life.

On the esteemed “Actions Detrimental” podcast, following the grand announcement of Hamlin’s contract extension, Jared Allen nudged Joe Gibbs to pull a few skeletons out of the closet concerning Denny Hamlin. Gibbs regaled him with a tale showcasing Hamlin’s penchant for zoning out during conversations, suggesting that peppering him with questions was the key to holding his attention.

Painting a picture from yesteryears, Gibbs recalled, “I do remember when he lived next door to me, Denny in his early days, I would go over and talk to him, and he is sitting on the couch. And I figured the couch is coming next door, going to talk to you. I figured he is going to be perky and after it. But I swear to you, when I started talking to him, he is sitting on the couch, and I was talking about some serious stuff, and the man went right out on me. He slept off.”

Gibbs also shared his secret weapon to keep Hamlin on his toes: Pat, Joe Gibbs’s indefatigable wife. She was always at Hamlin’s heels, hounding him about blaring music, haphazard parking, and the like. Gibbs mused, “She was after him all the time; the music is too loud; quit parking the cars in my area. I think it took her over 18 months to run Denny out of the neighborhood.”

Furthermore, Gibbs couldn’t resist dishing out a particularly cringe-worthy episode after a soirée, where Hamlin, perhaps a tad worse for wear, found himself face-to-face with his boss, who, at that time, happened to be his next-door neighbor.

In the tapestry of tales spun on the podcast, Joe Gibbs unraveled another whimsical thread from the quilt of his time with Denny Hamlin, especially during the latter’s greenhorn years as his neighbor. Weaving his narrative together, Gibbs zeroed in on a particular soirée orchestrated by Hamlin and his friends on a fateful Saturday night. When dawn broke the next day, Gibbs was greeted with the spectacle of his jet ski in disarray.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Gibbs, already trying to piece together the jet ski puzzle, found himself in another predicament. With a comedic tinge to his voice, Gibbs regaled, “I am focused on the jetski and all of a sudden […] I turned around, and there were two girls. I swear to you, they were half-dressed. And so they come over and go, Hey coach, I have left my purse on the other side across the lake. Can you take me over there on the jet ski? And I turned around and said, Not on your life,” sending ripples of laughter through the studio.
