What gets you a win in NASCAR? Some would say good aerodynamics. Some would argue that it is the fastest car. Others would say a cooperative crew. However, for a certain Kaulig Racing driver, it is a strategy that decides the winner of a race. After last week’s race at Pocono, the no. 16 Chevrolet driver has revealed his unique strategy for the upcoming Cup Series race at Richmond.

A. J. Allmendinger scored his second pole of the 2023 season for the NASCAR Xfinity Series at the Road America qualifying on Friday. However, being about 1000 miles away from the Cup event on Saturday, he will be starting at the back in the Cup Series race at Richmond, focusing more on his Xfinity Series race at Road America.

A master of road courses, A. J. Allmendinger flaunted a lap of 130.574 seconds at 111.606 mph around the 4.084-mile track. So far so good, analysts think that with the talent that he has, he should be focusing more on securing his place in the driver standings for the playoffs. But he has adopted one of the strangest strategies to break the Richmond curse.

In a recent conversation with Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, the Chevy driver seemed to be a tad too confident about the race at Road America.

He said: “We still wanted to do this you know, Richmond is a place that, with this car…whether we practice twenty minutes at a time it doesn’t really make a huge difference, starting at the back is a challenge but I think Richmond is a racetrack that we have the setup right that you can still move forward.”

Although this entire strategy might sound a bit unconventional, Allmendinger and Kaulig Racing President are on the same page as the former told Bob Pockrass:

“I told Chris that I’d be ready to go on Sunday and we’re still gonna, however, the race is gonna play out, the race to me it’s still gonna play out the same way whether we start upfront or middle or back of the pack and you know if we have a good race car we can still driver forward.”

For Allmendinger, mustering up his confidence before the race at Richmond is way more important than starting first. His voice resonated with conviction when he said, “If everything works out on Saturday and we go win a trophy, I’ll have way more confidence doing that than, you know, practicing for twenty minutes and start wherever we start…”

Many do not understand what is going on in the minds of the team and Allmendinger. However, the qualifying laps that witnessed the 41-year-old setting a new track record impressed everyone.

Allmendinger and Sage Karam battled each other to qualify for the fastest lap. Karam brought glory to his team in the very first session. Qualifying at 6th place, Karam’s performance has become the best starting position in the history of Sam Hunt Racing since Kaz Grala‘s 9th. With a lap of 110.242 mph, his time for the qualifying round was 2:10:872.
