In just a few week’s time, the NASCAR Cup Series will visit a brand new track. For the first time in NASCAR’s history, the cars will be competing against each other on a street track. The venue that has the honor of hosting such a race is the Chicago Street Course.

According to the calendar, the drivers will race there on July 2nd, and it will be a proper points race. The recently concluded race at the North Wilkesboro Speedway had the luxury of being a non-points race. Admittedly, not a lot of fans were happy with the quality of racing at North Wilkesboro. Now, keeping in mind that other racing disciplines that race at street circuits sometimes witness races with little to no overtaking, some have been concerned about the possibility of a substandard race on the cards.

Kevin Harvick’s Crew Chief Raised a Similar Overtaking Concern on Social Media

Recently, Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief Rodney Childers posted a tweet about the track. On the face of it, it was just a joke because the tweet was a GIF of a famous scene from the Austin Powers movie franchise. Over here, Austin Powers was trying to make a U-turn in an insanely narrow passageway. In a way, Childers was insinuating that the track will be so narrow that it would be difficult for cars to overtake.

This is pretty much a big fear for fans because it could potentially mean a boring professional race. On the other end of the scale, no cars have hit the track yet, so no one knows how big the cars are, compared to the Chicago Street Course.

In a later tweet, he admitted, “This wasn’t meant to be negative.. It was just crazy to see for the first time. An absolute ton of work has went into making this happen. We will reach a lot of people that have never seen a NASCAR race before. Is there going to be some road blocks and wrecks? Yes.”

It is great to see that he is giving the track a chance. After all, no one can judge how good or bad a new race track is, without seeing some racing action first and foremost. Though the organizers are not really helping their own case, with reports of exorbitant ticket prices.
