This year’s Cup Series started with a bang when William Byron took home the coveted Harley J. Earl trophy. Speculation and doubts were afoot regarding the finishing lap of the Daytona 500. Alex Bowman was a close contender who missed the checkered flag by the narrowest of margins. However, that does not nullify Byron’s solid growth as a racer, as testified by Kyle Busch.

As Busch enters his 23rd year in NASCAR with heightened energy, he has admitted he might be in the last stage of his career. But the Busch glory is not going to be obliterated from the family soon. Kyle Busch’s son, Brexton Busch, is a young prodigy already scoring several wins. Now Kyle wants his son to emulate William Byron.

William Byron entered the world of racing in an unconventional manner. Before you could spot him in the wild, unfettered thrill of a NASCAR race, he spent most of his time indoors. He practiced iRacing, a simulation of racing on computers. From that video game set-up, he slowly inched his way toward real tracks with legend cars, late models, and the ARCA Menards Series East.

Byron debuted in NASCAR Truck races in 2015 at 17 years of age. Since then, he has scripted history with several accolades to his name. Busch had lauded Byron’s driving skills in 2023. “All of his wins have been pretty diverse at all different race tracks, you know? I think William is a rare talent… He’s done a great job at driving all the stuff that he’s driven. He’s been in good stuff the entire time, but he’s made the most of that as well.”

Busch wants to assimilate the Byron ethic in his own family as well. At a pre-race press conference ahead of the Pennzoil 400, he recently spilled the beans about his son’s plans. “With the release on iRacing coming this week of our home track Milbridge and the micro-program being on there as well..he’s gonna get a lot of seat time on iRacing to be able to prepare himself…you know the season there starts in a couple of weeks.”

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather (Tom Busch), Brexton has lived up to the family legacy at a tender age. He started racing in 2020 at 5 years of age. Until October last year, he had over 30 wins across 11 different tracks in eight states. He snagged his recent victory only two weeks ago.

Last Christmas Brexton left a sweet message for Santa, which may explain how good of a racer boy he is being this year. “Merry Christmas Santa,” Brexton, 8, wrote on a dish reading ‘Santa’s Cookie Message Plate.’ The young racer added, “Thank you for the presents this year. I hope you have a Merry Christmas.”

His father, two-time Cup champion Kyle Busch, is already battling his way through 2024. After grabbing 63 Cup Series wins across his career, Busch is rooting for the crown jewel: a third Cup Series championship.
