A big question mark still looms over Kyle Busch’s future, and that has been the case ever since he moved to Richard Childress Racing back in 2023. Despite some early success, he has remained winless, and even after four races into the current season, he does not seem to be anywhere close to winning. This has been a huge hit on his “rowdy” personality, as Busch only seems to hide more with the backmarkers with every passing race. But Richard Childress’ grandson promises to bring him back to the front, even with the struggling team.

Richard Childress’s grandson promises a strong future for Busch

“We want to make Kyle Busch as successful as possible,” Austin Dillon said while reflecting on his grandfather’s team and their performance. He is also Busch’s teammate and regularly observes his extremely experienced and talented teammate struggling with pace and basic handling.

While he did expect better performance in the 2026 season, Kyle Busch’s struggles have continued. Sure, he did clinch the pole position at the Daytona 500 (that too, for the first time this season), but he soon faded in the main race. This has happened multiple times in the season now, and Busch still hasn’t managed to win. But Dillon’s statements seem to have something more in RCR’s package.

“We’ve got to focus on right now and living the now and not worry about tomorrow. And that goes for everybody at RCR,” he said on the SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “We’ve got to focus on right now how we can make our cars better, not looking for the next day or the next thing, because we have a lot of races in front of us to go in. And I believe we can do that. We’ve just got to focus on what’s in front of us.”

Richard Childress Racing had a headstart to the Next Gen car, which allowed Busch to showcase those strong performances in 2023. However, as the other teams caught up, RCR’s lack of pace became more apparent.

While Kyle Busch’s struggles with his car continue, Austin Dillon isn’t doing much better, either. He regularly finds himself in the midfield, which is not surprising, considering the team’s competitiveness. However, what is surprising is the fact that Richard Childress never wanted this for his grandson.

Richard Childress imagined a very different future for his grandson

Both Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon have made a name for themselves racing in NASCAR. While they are not the most competitive drivers on the field, they just so happen to be Richard Childress’ grandsons. If not their performance, then it is their connection with the motorsports giant that makes them so popular.

Even though it was quite apparent that they would end up choosing racing as a career, Richard Childress never wanted this for them to.

“You know, I wish both of my grandchildren, Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon, had chosen a different path forward,” he said. “But they wanted to race.”

However, that happened, and he now focuses on their ultimate goal: “Here they are today doing what they’re doing, following their dreams, and their dream is to go out, win the Daytona 500, and go out and win a championship.”

But for Kyle Busch, the dream is far more than that. He is a proven champion, and despite winning the Cup Series title twice, Busch currently fails to perform well. One might argue that he has lost competitiveness, but he regularly goes off to the NOAP Series to showcase just how “rowdy” he still is.

While the team continues to struggle, Dillon’s positivity does sound like Busch has a strong future in his remaining years with the team.
