The 2025 Tulsa Shootout is in full swing, bringing together the best of micro-sprint racing talent. But this year, it’s not just about the pros. NASCAR superstars Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch have been sharing the spotlight with their racing prodigy sons, Owen Larson and Brexton Busch. And while the dads are battling for their own glory, the kids are stealing the show—with a little extra spice on the side.

Kyle Larson had a tough outing in the A-Class Winged Heat Race. The HMS driver climbed up from 7th to 2nd, only to be denied the win by Frank Flud. Meanwhile, Owen had a blistering run from 8th to 1st and didn’t shy away from letting his dad know who was having the better day on the dirt. Owen also noted how his performance was inspired by Brexton Busch’s race earlier that day.

Owen’s big win—and bigger smack talk

10-year-old Owen Larson pulled off a stunner in his Junior Sprint Heat Race. After a 6th place finish in FuelTech Race 76, young Larson was gunning for the win in his next race. Especially after he saw Brexton Busch’s come-from-behind win in FuelTech Race 135. Owen secured the victory in FuelTech Race 138 and credited Brexton’s strategy.

“Right here we’re over at staging,” Owen told FloRacing. “I saw Brexton on the thumb. And he kind of jumped it. So I was gonna do the same thing and it worked out for me and Brexton.”

Brexton, meanwhile, had a solid run of his own, winning his race from the sixth position. But it was Owen’s gutsy pass on a competitor that earned him the spotlight. “Once we got on the track, I’m up to third and then we catch up to the lapped cars,” Owen explained. “I gotta make the move. He hit the berm and then slid up and I just braked, lifted off the gas, and got to the lead.”

And if you’re wondering if Owen’s shy about letting his dad know who’s got more heat race wins for the day, think again. When asked if he wanted to remind his dad, Owen’s quick response was, “I want to remind him!”

Playful digs aside, the younger Larson’s performance was nothing short of impressive. Meanwhile, Brexton stayed focused, qualifying for the next round in another category with a solid fourth-place finish. With their sons doing incredibly well, let’s take a look at how their NASCAR dads are performing at the 2025 Tulsa Shootout.

Are the kids better than their NASCAR dads?

While their kids are making waves, Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch are in the thick of their battles. Kyle Busch has been on fire in the Outlaw Class, snagging wins in both the Winged and Non-Wing Outlaw heats. His take? These cars are a whole different beast—and he’s loving every second of it.

“I’ll tell you what, man, these outlaw cars are so much fun because they have so much power in them,” Busch said. “The Lucas Oil with that Lineman motor is a great combination. It was really ripping that high side.”

For Busch, these wins are a breath of fresh air after a tough NASCAR season. And he’s not shy about sharing just how thrilling the experience has been. “Just worried about f—ing ripping the top or not… I got goosebumps,” he admitted.

Kyle Larson, on the other hand, has had a more subdued start in Tulsa. Fresh off a record-breaking win at Perth Motorplex in Australia’s High Limit Racing, Larson struggled to replicate that success here. He finished second in his A-Class Main Winged Heat Race, trailing Frank Flud. It’s not the result he hoped for, but there’s still time for him to turn things around.

Christopher Bell, another NASCAR star, delivered one of the event’s most dramatic moments with a last-lap victory in the Non-Wing Outlaw Qualifier. Bell’s bold switch from the inside lane to the high line secured him a win by just 0.029 seconds.

“It’s about time the driver of the #21 finally showed up this week,” Bell said, giving credit to the track crew and expressing relief after a slow start to the competition.

The Tulsa Shootout has always been a hotbed of competition, but this year’s family dynamics are adding a whole extra dimension. Brexton Busch, guided by the steady hand of his father, has been a consistent force, advancing through multiple categories. Meanwhile, much like his father, Owen Larson’s fearless style has captured the attention of fans and competitors alike.

As the event unfolds, all eyes are on these father-son duos. Can the dads rally to outshine their kids, or will the next generation continue to steal the show? One thing’s for sure—the Tulsa Shootout is delivering drama, excitement, and a fair share of playful family feuds.
