Not just the last few races, but the last decade has seen dominance from Team Penske drivers at the Talladega Superspeedway. They have won more than half of the NASCAR Cup Series races at Talladega since 2012. A major reason for that to happen is the performance of Brad Keselowski.

Races at Talladega are always expected to be wreck-filled. Betting against that would be a mistake. Despite that, Keselowski has five wins at the track, which is the most among the drivers currently on the Cup Series scene.

You would think the key to Keselowski’s record at Talladega Superspeedway is that he somehow knows how to avoid crashing there. However, the driver himself believes that is not how it works. He feels it is an “inexact science.”

The challenges of racing at Talladega Superspeedway

It’s not an exact science,” Keselowski said. “There’s been times where I’ve kicked myself and said, ‘Oh, my god. I got in a wreck and I could see it coming. Should’ve known better’. There’s times where I back down and say ‘Oh they’re gonna wreck’, and they don’t wreck. It’s an inexact science,” the No. 2 car driver said.

The 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion also said that it takes judgment and experience to see a wreck coming well before it happens. He compared the situation to a “mother’s sense” of her kids.

Generally speaking, you have a pretty good clue over the years of people running places they shouldn’t be running. Things of that nature. It builds up like a mother’s sense about their children. It’s the same thing,” Keselowski continued.

Last fall I thought we were going to win the race with two or three (laps) to go. We were making the pass for the lead and the next thing I know we’re all wrecked,” Keselowski said. “It’s a love-hate affair with that track for sure and hopefully, we’ll love it. I feel like we’re due for a good finish there,” he added.

After winning the second race of the playoffs, Keselowski has two poor finishes. He will aim to once again win the second race of the round and enter the next round of the playoffs. Talladega is a good chance for him to do that.
