Ahead of this weekend’s Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr and manager Mike Davis spoke about the sport in general. To be specific, they talked about short tracks and their significance to NASCAR. According to them, short-track racing is one of the most important things to stock car racing. This is even when placed in comparison to other race tracks that are gracing the Cup Series calendar. Davis was particularly vocal about the importance of short-track to NASCAR’s history.

He mentioned on the Dale Jr Download podcast, “Why is that so important to us? I think I know why. Short tracks are personal for NASCAR and for stock car racing. If we can’t get short tracks right, this is our stuff. The stock cars belong on short tracks. Now we’ll go to intermediates and we’ll go to superspeedways and we’ll try out road courses.”

He continued, “But short tracks belongs to us. IndyCar don’t do short tracks right. All those other racing series don’t do short tracks right. Go all the way to the grassroots, Late Models or whatever, that’s us. If we can’t get that right, it says something. It’s almost like it’s personal, you advocated for short tracks, everybody advocated for short tracks. Why? Cause that’s like our family. It’s deeply personal, short tracks are.”

What did Dale Earnhardt Jr say about this?

In response, the former Daytona 500 winner admitted that more needs to be done to save these tracks. Already, the short tracks are undergoing a number of changes. So it is a matter of time before the results speak for themselves. One thing is for sure, NASCAR has to be committed to the race tracks because they want to put on a good show.

For now, Earnhardt Jr along with everyone else is looking ahead to the 2023 Daytona 500. Ahead of the iconic race, the front row sees a Hendrick Motorsports lockout, with Alex Bowman in front of Kyle Larson. Defending champion Joey Logano starts third, ahead of Aric Almirola, and Christopher Bell as the best of the Toyotas.
