Matt DiBenedetto finished the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in second place, amid all the suspense over his future in the Series. DiBenedetto is still waiting on news from his current team, Woods Brothers Racing, regarding next season.

Despite DiBenedetto’s confidence and desire to return to the team, time is running out. One would think that DiBenedetto saw the last few races, especially the one at Las Vegas, as an audition and an incentive for a potential offer for next season. However, DiBenedetto believes there is no room for complacency in NASCAR, no matter what the situation is.

The driver of the No. 21 car says success in NASCAR demands everything from a driver. He believes he needs to be at his best in every single race, given the competition.

Matt DiBenedetto opens up on the challenges in NASCAR

“You’re performing and you’re racing guys obviously like Kurt who’s an incredible driver and a veteran. And you’ve got Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick, my teammates, all the Penske folks. All these drivers are incredibly talented and veterans,” Matt DiBenedetto said after Sunday’s race. “So you have to be so good and be at the very top of your game and put your entire life into this if you want to be successful.”

That is how the 29-year-old driver approaches every race. The margin for error is less, and DiBenedetto believes non-performance leads to not having a job altogether.

“Every time I ever strap in a race car, I promise you every time. My career and life has taught me no matter how long I’m in this sport, every time I ever strap in the car no matter what I’m driving, I’m always driving. I always say I’m always driving for my life. Fighting for my career and my life. You’ve got to be,” DiBenedetto said. “This sport is‑‑ if you don’t perform, you’re not going to have a job. You’ve got to always be at the top of your game.” 

DiBenedetto has two straight second-place finishes at Las Vegas. He is not in the playoff scenario, as he was knocked out in the first round. But this is still a very important week for him, as the deadline for the team to pick his option is near.
