The tragic passing of Coy Gibbs right before the  Cup championship race in Phoenix impacted the entire NASCAR community in a deeply profound way. One of the biggest things most realized, agreed upon, and reminded of was just how unpredictable life is, and what really matters, something the spotter of Bubba Wallace also emphasized on.

“Life certainly has a way of reminding us what’s important,” Freddie Kraft said.

“I mean we dedicate our lives to this job, to this sport, and in that moment yesterday morning when I heard this news, I really, I really couldn’t care any less about what was gonna happen on that racetrack.”

The spotter described that he can’t imagine how Ty Gibbs must be feeling, “to go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in just a span of hours.” Kraft then sympathized with Joe Gibbs, a man who has lost both of his sons in less than five years.

“You think about Coach Gibbs, the only word that comes to mind is heartbroken,” he added.

Bubba Wallace on Coy Gibbs’ death

After the race, Bubba Wallace decided to share his thoughts and feelings on the tragedy that had struck not his temporary teammate for the second half of the 2022 season.

Ty Gibbs had replaced Kurt Busch in the #45 car (and then swapped seats with Wallace for the #23) after the veteran’s seemingly minimal injury ended up forcing him out of the season, and eventually, his career.

Wallace tweeted, “Been a really tough day. Hate we couldn’t have a better result. None of that matters at the end of the day. Heart goes out to Ty, Coach, Pat and the entire Gibbs family. Coy was always great to me!”

“Hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight!”
