Alex Bowman missed Sunday’s Talladega Super Speedway race due to the concussion-like symptoms he suffered post the Texas crash. Bowman completed the race and not many thought that the wreck was serious. But there is one NASCAR member who saw this coming.

In the recent episode of Door Bumper Clear, NASCAR spotter Brett Griffin revealed that he was not surprised when Hendrick Motorsports revealed that Alex Bowman was suffering from a concussion. He said, “My reaction was – ‘not surprised! And I say that Jason (co-host) because I was beside of his spotter, long time friend of mine Kevin Hamlin. And we were having some conversations around Alex’s demeanor after the wreck over the radio.”

Talking about Bowman’s wreck at Texas, Griffin said that he was there when Bowman hit the wall. He said, “This opens up a major concern for me because this driver hit the wall and he made the comment over the radio ‘That’s the hardest I have ever hit the wall.’ And his demeanor over the radio had his spotter concerned for his safety.

Further, he explained, “No concussion was ruled because he did not have to go to the infield care center. Because he continued on yet. He continued to race. I think we just saw with the Tua incident, with the Miami Dolphins that back-to-back concussions in a short amount of time can really mess you up.”

Brett Griffin on facing an Alex Bowman situation as a spotter

Brett Griffin explained that he knew that the Texas wreck was serious. He shared that he was in constant touch with Bowman via text to check on his health. He said,

“But I would imagine when he got into that world of Outlaws car, something wasn’t right mechanically with him. And that’s when he raised the flag up. Man! I probably need to be seen and obviously, it was determined that he had a concussion.”

Furthermore, he said that Bowman took the right decision. He said, “Thank God! ‘Cause there ain’t no more dangerous place in the world to drive a race car than Talladega Super Speedway.”

But Griffin did raise concern over how to evaluate a driver who seems to be okay. He said that such situations can be tricky even though the signs are always there. Talking about how he wouldn’t know what to do in a situation like Alex Bowman’s, he said,

“But as a spotter, we don’t know what to do in that situation. I don’t know whether to text Justin Haley’s girlfriend Libby or his mom or him or Chris… It is scary that a hit that everybody said didn’t look bad was (so) bad.”
