After the success of the Clash at the LA Memorial Coliseum, the discourse around the short tracks suddenly picked up the flame again. It is such a divisive topic amongst NASCAR fans that there will hardly be any neutrals. Either you’re in for more short tracks or you’re in favor of no short tracks at all.

Anyway, it’s the former that seems to be the ‘way forward’ as of now, especially considering the developments around the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

It was reported back in 2020 that NASCAR aims to convert the Southern California circuit into a short track. The proposal was for a track that had long straights like Martinsville, another fixture that was recently ‘shortened’, along with high banked corners like Bristol.

But according to a recent report, there isn’t much of a plan with the intention of the reconfigurations.

Dave Allen, the president of Auto Club Speedway recently said, “a timetable has not been established as of yet.”

NASCAR fans react to this news

This news led to a few fans feeling a bit cheated, for obvious reasons.

“I like….sorta feel lied to,” wrote one fan.

“I like…sorta feel that plans change over a 2 year period in a pandemic,” wrote another.

While one wrote, “They’re not saying it but I feel like keeping the current layout isn’t really in the cards. The choice is between converting it to a 1/2 mile or selling the entire thing off. Nobody in the industry is willing to go through the growing pains of a 2 mile repave, especially when the real estate it sits on is so valuable.”

One fan wrote, “They won’t even commit to the change. They also won’t commit to keeping the current layout. It went from ‘here is the plan’ to ‘idk lol maybe we will do it maybe we won’t'”
