Fans are flocking to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and for good reason. The 109th Indy 500 is on the horizon, and ‘The Brickyard’ has plenty of fresh attractions and updates that motorsports enthusiasts can experience in the coming days. Ahead of the Sonsio Grand Prix, the venue is opening its Merchandise Trackside Flagship Store, giving fans the chance to freshen up their gear ahead of ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ later this month.

Featuring brands such as Under Armour, lululemon, and TravisMathew, fans have plenty to look forward to on their next visit to the racetrack. Could this lead to more visitors at the venue? Time will tell. But it certainly seems like a step in the right direction to improve the overall experience.

IMS President excited by the flagship store’s offerings

Fans love exclusive merchandise. And Indianapolis Motor Speedway has plenty of it now, thanks to the new flagship store which is opening just a few weeks before one of the biggest motorsports events in the country. On Thursday, May 8th, officials unveiled its new flagship official trackside merchandise store located at the IMS Midway, featuring items that can’t be found anywhere else.

Sharing his thoughts about the Midway Superstore, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles said, “It’s a proper shopping experience. We’ve even got stuff in here you can’t buy anywhere but in here. So that makes it a little bit of fun, the amount of things, the amount of different things, the wide variety of things you can get in here put this store together.” Meanwhile, Senior Art Director for IMS and IndyCar, Mandy Walsh, also went on to say, “I wore a jacket the other day, and everybody’s like, ‘I want that jacket.’ I’m like it was last year’s jacket, and it is sold out. It’s gone.”

The new store is packed with dozens of shirts, shorts, hats, and other gear, many of which will only be available at this year’s Indy 500. Michael Kaltenmark from Indianapolis Motor Speedway is optimistic about the reception it’ll receive by fans, saying, “We think this jacket is going to be the item to have this May. It’s a lot, but so is the racing capital of the world and the greatest spectacle in racing, and we feel like this fits the theme perfectly.”

What’s your perspective on:

Will the new flagship store make the Indy 500 experience even more unforgettable for fans this year?

Have an interesting take?

The new flagship store will not replace the existing shops around the track or at the newly renovated Hall of Fame Museum. Instead, it will be an add-on to what’s already available, catering to fans who want to buy official Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar merchandise. On that note, Walsh added, “We are trying to get more into driver-specific stuff. We just kind of, you know, dipped our toe in it this year, but next year we’re gonna probably do more of that.”

However, it seems like the new flagship store isn’t the only thing ‘new’ at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway has another addition

The iconic ‘Pagoda’ is also receiving a much-needed update. The scoreboard software at the top of the structure has been outdated for a long time, and large panels were removed and refurbished over the winter to give it a fresh, new look. Now, the pagoda also features state-of-the-art LED screens that can display things like the race running order, date, along with other details.

Sharing his thoughts about it, Michael Kaltenmark from IMS said, “Over the winter, we removed those panels, which, by the way, are quite large, 25 feet long, eight feet tall, about a foot wide, pulled those down, refurbished the panels. Over the last few years, it was dark at the top of the pagoda, and now to be able to not just turn them on again, but program them and really enhance the guest experience really is befitting of the racing capital of the world.”

It seems Indianapolis Motor Speedway is leaving no stone unturned to improve the fan experience. The excitement is at an all-time high, especially with the Indy 500 being held in just a few weeks. NASCAR driver Kyle Larson will be attempting the ‘double’ once again, and the racer will hope the weather allows him to achieve his dream this time around.
