Back in ’09, Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson were neck and neck, the cream of the crop at HMS, with everyone betting on Martin to snag a championship just like Johnson. But as fate would have it, Martin capped his Hendrick stint with a handful of victories before moving to Michael Waltrip Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, and then Stewart Haas Racing, before eventually calling it quits. Despite the fierce rivalry on the track, Martin and Johnson shared some golden moments off the tracks.

Recently, a gem from the past popped up online – a chuckle-worthy commercial from the 2003 Daytona 500 featuring both Martin and Johnson, all thanks to a throwback share by Martin himself, giving fans a taste of their camaraderie over a Gatorade endorsement. When fans saw that video, they were all nostalgic about how good old NASCAR advertisements were.

In a classic ad, Mark Martin, then a hotshot at Roush Fenway Racing, and Jimmie Johnson, flying the flag for Hendrick Motorsports, took a spin as driving instructors. But, true to form, they couldn’t resist turning a lesson into a full-blown race, leading to a bit of mayhem as their cars tangoed on the track. The punchline? “You can take the driver out of the race, but you can’t take the race out of the driver.” And boy, did it crack everyone up.

Before we dive into the hilarious reactions of the NASCAR fans to this two-decade-old gem, let’s take a stroll down memory lane with a few other ads that had us in stitches.

In another memorable spot, Mark Martin was seen busy signing autographs when a fan begged Carl Edwards to show off his famous backflip. Edwards, ever the gentleman, politely declined. But Martin, always up for a laugh, roped in Fernando, his lookalike stunt double, to dazzle the crowd with backflips, leaving fans bamboozled into thinking it was Martin all along. Edwards could only shake his head and call Martin a “crazy old man.”

Then there’s Denny Hamlin, showcasing his “chill” side by indulging in a bit of gardening. Only, Hamlin’s lawn mower is anything but the standard issue, turning yard work into a race against his unsuspecting neighbor. The competitive glint in Hamlin’s eye as he edged past is priceless.

And let’s not forget Dale Earnhardt Jr‘s race against time to return his girlfriend’s forgotten lipstick, only to find out he had fetched the wrong shade after a frantic 250-mile dash. Classic mix-up!
