End of the race. Pit road. Two drivers going at each other. NASCAR. This was more or less what happened at the end of the Xfinity Series race at Martinsville between Ty Gibbs and Sam Mayer.

Gibbs, who led the highest number of laps in the race and had a clear shot at the win in the end, felt the sure-win was taken away from him by Mayer. As a result, he confronted the JR Motorsports driver and before anyone knew it, he threw a couple of punches.

Within a few seconds, the brawl was taken care of by the officials as the two drivers were separated.

However, Gibbs found himself on the receiving end of the fans’ assessment of the situation. Because the thing is, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver isn’t a contender for the most popular driver awards.

And him choosing to leave his helmet on before delivering a punch wasn’t exactly helping his cause of that award either.

Sam Mayer believes Ty Gibbs has “put himself in that position”

In a post-race interview, Sam Mayer spoke about the brawl with Ty Gibbs. “Yeah, I mean, 100 grand on the line, put the bumper to him because that’s what short track racing is all about and he got upset,” he said.

“He threw a couple punches but they were weak, so I can’t say much about that, it’s kinda funny.”

Sam Mayer said he doesn’t understand how this could’ve been one-sided since Gibbs does the same thing every week, only this he was on the wrong side of it.

“I’m going to go out there and do my best and he can do whatever he wants,” Mayer continued.

“At the end of the day, anyone can do whatever they want to him because he’s put himself in that reputation so it doesn’t matter.”
