After acing his first ever road courses race at Road America, Sam Mayer had said that it was just a good omen for him. But it definitely did not seem like a mere omen as he bagged his second Xfinity Series road course win at Watkins Glen. Besides witnessing a remarkable improvement in his burnout moves, the fans also took immense pleasure in the 17th-place finish of Joe Gibbs‘ grandson.

Fans hated Ty Gibbs more than they sided with Sam Mayer

Fans seemed to be very happy about Ty Gibbs getting slammed out of the track. A group of people commented on how they hated Ty Gibbs and were happy about him getting spun out. While another pointed at how unusually fast Ty Gibbs’ car was and hinted at the probability of Gibbs receiving an undue advantage from his connections.

Someone booed Gibbs saying, “Whooo you go Sam 😁 BWAHAHAHA Golden Boy Gibbs 😝”

Another fan decided to go southwards and exclaim, “I will never feel bad for ty gibbs”

“LOL Gibbs Got Mayer’d @sam_mayer_🏁” joked a Sam Mayer fan.

But it was not all about taking sides for the fans. They noticed the oiled-up track and the disparity between the speed of the #19 and the other cars running on the 4.4-mile race course, “How illegal was the 19 to be that fast. And he had it coming. When you race like that, you get raced like that.”

A major portion of the comments seemed to be made by Ty Gibbs haters. However, some of them did not approve of Mayer’s ‘unintentional’ move, either. One of them said, “Wtf? I’m no Gibbs fan but that’s fucked up….he purposely ran through the guy? @NASCAR is this the type of crap you want that’s some bullshit!”

In that light, someone else commented, “I’m not a Ty Gibbs guy. The “glad a series regular won” is stupid. Race people clean. That makes for a great finish. This is when Ty should have gave Sam the ol 1-2🤜🏾”

Sam Mayer took advantage of the late restart at the Sunoco GO Rewards 200 and nudged archrival Ty Gibbs as they entered turn 1. He then went on to clear Sheldon Creed around another turn and led the ultimate lap to grab the checkered flag and with that, his second career win in four weeks. During a post-race interview, a reporter asked Mayer what he felt about the contract skirmish with Gibbs. The JR Motorsports driver said, “I feel bad for doing that, obviously. You don’t want to take out a Gibbs car like that or any car like that. But just trying to get another win in the Xfinity Series.”

“I was in there. I put my nose in there. That’s part of it. Fenders are fenders. It’s an accident, but I think everyone can agree that it’s OK for a Xfinity Series regular to win this race,” he added.

While talking to NASCAR about the same, Ty Gibbs said he was not happy with the results and, after having led 70 laps of the race, it was really disheartening. The Joe Gibbs Racing Cup Series driver admitted, “It just really sucks, we have really fast Monster energy, he gets us Toyota Supra. I really appreciate all the hard work from them. Definitely wished that caution didn’t come out there. It definitely sucks to get cleaned out there.”

However, he believes that it is all part of the game. Although he had really wished to get his 13th Xfinity Series win at Watkins Glen, he congratulated Sam on his second road course win.
