NASCAR Fans Unsure Whether Kurt Busch Should Be Getting the Special Waiver After His Brain Injury Worsens

Heading into the 2022 season, or rather, after winning the race in Kansas Kurt Busch could never have imagined how it would turn out the way it has. The veteran driver is out, has been out, and will be out for more races to come after failing to completely recover from the head injury he sustained a few weeks ago.

According to journalist Bob Pockrass, Busch has been once again ruled out from the upcoming races in Watkins Glen and Daytona. His spot will be filled by Ty Gibbs, who has replaced him in all the races prior as well.

However, the biggest thing to note here is the fact that NASCAR has allowed Busch a waiver of sorts.

“NASCAR has said previously his waiver would continue into playoffs if he is among the 16 drivers who qualify for playoff field. So he could come back during first round & advance (likely would need to win),” Pockrass reported.

This very thing, the fact that he now has a waiver despite missing out on so many races and perhaps, missing out on more, was something that didn’t sit well with some of the NASCAR fans, as they called this decision out.

How the situation of Kurt Busch could play in favor of the other Busch

It’s been known for months, the situation of Kyle Busch at Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota since the cracks in his future at the two entities began to appear publically. Now, the #18 driver is someone who anyone would have on their team and it’d be a win-win situation.

But the thing is, the reality is, it hasn’t happened yet.

There seems to be no ending, at least no happy ending as of now to the future of the Kyle Busch saga.

Yet, his brother’s unfortunate situation at 23XI Racing could end up being the ray of hope for Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota, 23XI Racing, and Busch himself.

At 44, Kurt Busch isn’t that old to still be running as a full-time NASCAR driver in a top team, in the top division. However, this injury along with the fact that his team have signed Tyler Reddick for 2023, that in itself is a big sign that he would’ve had to make ‘the call’ on his career.

But now, if he does retire after this season, Kyle Busch, while remaining under the Toyota and JGR umbrella, can replace him, Ty Gibbs can run the #18, and 23XI can continue their hunt for the charter.

Whether this will be how it turns out, only time will tell.
