Earlier, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Red Farmer, and the late Mike Stefanik were inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Sadly, Stefanik passed away in 2019, so his wife collected the award in his stead. Earlier, some controversy erupted when it emerged that she would not get a chance to speak.

Fortunately, NASCAR has since rectified that policy, though after much outcry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Stefanik’s wife Julie said, “Together with my daughters, we have founded the Michael P. Stefanik charitable foundation. The goal of the foundation is to honor his memory through educational opportunities. For young men and women who exemplify his relentless passion in the automotive and aviation fields. Thank you for allowing me to share a little bit about Michael.”

What else did she say about the NASCAR Hall of Famer?

According to her, Stefanik was more than just a racer, as he was a great husband, father, and all-around family man. Obviously, she will continue to miss him. Julie insisted that she wasn’t just his wife, but they were a team. This is because she acted as his spotter for several years. Like many, she believed that he was an ordinary man who was capable of doing extraordinary things.

In all honesty, Stefanik’s passing was pretty tragic, as he was only 61 years old. As it turned out, he borrowed a friend’s airplane and went for a joyride. Unfortunately, the plane developed some mechanical gremlins during the return trip. As a result, the ailing plane lost power and crashed in a wooded area somewhere in Connecticut. Although the paramedic response team swiftly airlifted him to the nearby Rhode Island Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

In his NASCAR career, he primarily raced in the Xfinity and Truck Series. Out of 26 race starts, he had one Top 10 finish, where he scored 8th place at New Hampshire. In the Truck arena, he enjoyed a bit more success. Stefanik recorded 10 Top 10 finishes and a career-best 2nd at the season opener at Homestead-Miami in 1999.
