There has been an ongoing rift between the teams and NASCAR. The issue mostly surrounds the money split between the teams. Based on how the new TV deal goes about. However, recently, NASCAR spotter, Brett Griffin, expressed his thoughts on the new charter system in NASCAR. Which, according to him, sets the minimum pay for the lowest-paid team at approximately $4 million. Griffin argues that the revenue share should include more than just TV money and should include a share of all revenue streams that the sport generates. Moreover, he also believes that only competitive teams deserve to receive a fair share of the pie.

During the podcast, Griffin stated, “The team’s revenue share only exists of sharing the TV money. They don’t get to share the money from parking, concessions, tickets, or all the other revenue streams that these racetracks and our lovely sport has. That’s not fair. They should get a piece of the whole pie.”

He further added, “If you’re going to go out there and be over a second off at every racetrack we go to this year. You shouldn’t be talking about sharing $16-$18 million of your piece of the pie. Because you’re not contributing to making the sport better.”

In his view, the charter system should reward teams based on their performance and the value of the charter should increase with success. He says that some teams are not competitive and do not deserve the same amount of money as more successful teams. He also expressed his belief that teams like Hendrick Motorsports deserve a larger share of the revenue generated by the sport, as they are contributing more to making it faster and more competitive.

Griffin commented, “If you’re competitive, I’m all for you getting money, but if you suck, I’m not.” Furthermore, he emphasized that the sport is still based on sponsorship and that teams without good sponsors or billionaires backing them are unlikely to succeed. Further mentioning, “This is now the billionaire club.”

What are the problems with the NASCAR charter system?

The charter system in NASCAR is a system introduced in 2016. It was intended to regulate the number of cars allowed to compete in each race. Also to provide a guaranteed starting spot for each team that has a charter.

The charters also give teams a share of the race’s revenue, including television money. The value of a team’s charter is based on the team’s performance. With winning teams and highly competitive teams receiving a greater share of the revenue.
