NASCAR Halts Rookie Driver’s Cup Series Debut Race at ‘Dangerous’ Talladega Superspeedway

NASCAR has halted rookie driver James Davidson from making his Cup Series Debut at Talladega. The series has cited safety reasons for the move. Davidson will now have his debut in next week’s race at Pocono.

NASCAR won’t be allowing him to race because he has never raced on the track and the race is being run without a practice race or qualifying. The Talladega track is known to be tricky for newcomers and the series made the decision to minimize any potential risk of collision.

The driver posted a tweet revealing the deferment of his NASCAR Cup Series debut. He wrote, “UPDATE: NASCAR Cup Series debut deferred 1 week to Pocono.”

He added, “I was pumped about the opportunity to take the green flag. However, I fully understand and appreciate NASCAR’s position,”

33-year-old Australian driver, James Davison will now make his debut next week at Pocono on June 27. Earlier, he used to compete in many open-wheel racing series including the IndyCar series. He has competed in the Indy 500 five times with a best finish of P12.

Additionally, He drives part-time in the Xfinity series and have done multiple races. However, he haven’t raced in a single superspeedway.

NASCAR don’t let rookies debut on Superspeedways like Talladega and Daytona

Usually, NASCAR only allows drivers with prior experience in lower-level cars on superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega. The rule is to limit any dangerous on-track situation that might lead to a multi-car crashes. The superspeedways are famous for producing some of the worst multi-car collisions. Recently in the NASCAR race at Daytona, Ryan Newman was part of a multi-car collision and faced a horrific crash in the last laps of the race.

Before letting them race in the Cup Series on these tracks the drivers must have experienced the tracks in lower divisions.
