Joey Logano came quite close to the NASCAR Cup Series 2020 title. Logano was the first one to enter the ‘Championship 4’ race and even had a couple of weeks over the rest of his competitors to prepare for the Phoenix finale. A season with a championship 4 showing is always indicative of a highly successful season.
However, some statistics suggest that Logano’s season was not as good as it was last year and he was not at his best. As per leading NASCAR analyst David Smith, while Logano was the third-best passer across the NASCAR Cup Series field last year, he was in the negative this year.
“I don’t think he looked anything like he did in 2019… I thought he made a tremendous progression last season, was hoping to see that continue. He left races on the table,” Smith explained during a podcast.

Why Joey Logano could have been better in 2020
He went on to make an interesting point about the Team Penske star. When at his very best and has when he has no weaknesses, Logano can produce some highly special results. This was what he missed in his performances this season, and if Logano reaches the level he is capable of, he can be quite dominant.
Logano had a fantastic start to his season, where he won two of the first four races. He then had a string of inconsistent performances and could not put up a regular showing as a top-five contender or a race winner. He then found some momentum towards the end of the season and sealed his place in the championship race with a win at Kansas.
Logano did not have shades of the driver he was in 2019 and towards the end of 2018 when he won the title. Smith expressed that if he can bring that performance back, Logano could certainly be a force to reckon with. When at his best, many other drivers tend to be wary of what he can do on the track.

What Logano needs to do in the 2021 NASCAR season
“I’d like to see the return of the driver we saw in 2019 and at the end of 2018. I want that driver back. That was something special, just this ruthless, efficient mover. He rankles some folks when they watch him at his height. We need to see a return to that,” Smith said.
“A driver who disappears over the course of a race just ultimately isn’t all that competitive in the grand scheme. I think there is a more competitive Joey Logano to be had.”
