The Nordschleife of the Nürburgring is one place where legends are forged and occasionally tested by fire. In 1976, the world watched in horror as Niki Lauda’s Ferrari burst into flames on this same asphalt. He came out lucky, surviving the accident with scars. But not everyone coming to drive in “Green Hell” is that lucky, and on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the outcome was tragic.

The six other drivers involved were taken for medical evaluation, with authorities later confirming that none had sustained life-threatening injuries. The loss of Juha Miettinen is shocking for everyone, because he was not a casual participant in the race.
He was a champion of the V4 class and a frequent face in the NLS. He was someone who raced out of simple passion. In fact just hours before the race, he shared a rather upbeat photo on Instagram, and that ended up being his final message.
“Ready for the N24H Qually races. Two races in two days. The first one into the night. The second one is way too early in the morning, just so you get a taste of that Nürburgring 24H race feeling…” Tragically, he would never get to see the next start. Of course, everyone is looking for the reason behind this fatal accident.
While the official report isn’t out, the initial one suggests the seven-car pile-up may have been triggered by oil on the track. Now, given the severity and grim nature of the incident, there are some steps being taken to honor the fallen.
The incident had already led to the total suspension of Saturday’s track activity. And in the wake of the tragedy, organizers also announced a minute’s silence ahead of Sunday’s running, ensuring Miettinen’s memory would be honored by all who take to the circuit.

“Shocked by what happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones.”
While the Formula 1 driver was in the vicinity of the multi-car pileup, he was left unscathed yet shaken up. His words reflected a sobering reality that binds every level of racing: the passion for speed is inseparable from its risks.
As the motorsport world mourns the loss of Juha Miettinen, it stands as a painful reminder of the human cost behind the spectacle. In a sport defined by courage and pursuit of the limit, moments like these bring everything into sharp perspective—unity, respect, and remembrance rising above competition.
