Without a doubt, Jimmie Johnson has become one of the most influential figures in the NASCAR scene. As a 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, many of the younger generation of drivers grew up admiring him.

With the 44-year old set to step away from full-time racing at the end of this season, he will be missed. In the wake of Johnson missing out on a playoff spot, a few drivers in the community have decided to pay tribute to him.

The latest driver to join that train is 19-year old Xfinity driver, Ryan Vargas. Vargas is set to run a brand new livery that resembles the one that Johnson used to take his first Busch Series win.

Why so much effort to honour Jimmie Johnson?

As mentioned before, Jimmie Johnson has achieved a lot in his NASCAR tenure. Sadly, he was unable to make it into the playoffs, and since he is stepping away from full-time racing, this was his last chance.

Truthfully, it would have been a fairytale to see Johnson in the playoffs for one last time. However, his chances were slim, considering that he never made it into the playoffs last year as well.

This season, Johnson mounted a strong challenge and was much closer than before. He was one of four drivers vying for two vacant spots, and barely missed out.

Of course, just because he is stepping away from full-time racing, it doesn’t mean goodbye forever. The 44-year old will likely still be open to part-time gigs with different teams or with Hendrick Motorsports, itself. Truthfully, no matter who drives the #48 car, everyone will always associate it with Jimmie Johnson.

With 7 championships, the man has set a number of records and is close to legendary status. In fact he is right up there alongside the likes of Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.
