NASCAR racing has always attracted the best prospects and talents from across the globe. With several foreign drivers finding their new motorsports ventures in America, Cameron “Cam” Waters becomes the latest addition to the growing presence of international drivers. The 29-year-old veteran of the Australian Supercar Series will be making his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Martinsville Speedway.

He will be driving the #66 ThorSport Racing Ford in his first attempt at competing in a NASCAR event. Surprisingly, his move does not come at the back of Shane van Gisbergen’s rise to the NASCAR scene. In fact, in an interview with Bob Pockrass, he revealed that he had been plotting a move to compete in NASCAR before SVG’s triumph at the Chicago Street Race last year.

Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR debut was indeed a huge success. Hailing from the Project91 program by Trackhouse Racing, the Kiwi Speedster created history in his first-ever competitive race. Not only that, given the impact of his win in Chicago, it opened the door for him to run a full-time schedule with Kaulig Racing in the Truck Series this season. Naturally, many drivers from the Supercar series would have taken note of SVG’s impact and contemplated trying their hands at NASCAR racing. However, for Cam Waters, a decision regarding his future plans to race in NASCAR was already in motion before SVG’s historic win.

I mean, I started a kind of dialogue with ThorSport [Racing] and whatnot before Shane had even done it here to do the Chicago race. It’s something that I’ve been looking for a long time. I’ve been racing sprint cars for three years, with dirt and late model before that. So yeah, this hasn’t just come out of nowhere.”

Cam Waters also shared how his visit to Martinsville weighed in on his decision to try his hand at competing in NASCAR. “We came to Martinsville 12 months ago and watched a race, and that’s what probably sparked a bit more interest in me to pursue it. I’ve just been chipping away in the background over the last 12 months to make something happen like this,” he said.

Having already locked into a full-season commitment with the Supercars championship, Waters will have to make a career call after Friday’s event on whether or not he sees himself competing in NASCAR races.

Having already checked off his bucket list by securing his debut NASCAR run, the Australian speedster is still not sure about his future plans. However, despite accepting that it would be a dream move for him to run a full-time schedule in NASCAR, Waters wants to take his time in deciding his next move.

As per NASCAR.com, he said, “I’ve got a pretty cool thing going on in Australia racing Supercars. For me to do the odd NASCAR race like we’re doing this weekend is pretty cool, so we’ll go through this weekend and have a bit of fun and work out what NASCAR is all about and see what happens in the future.”

He also shared how he wants to soak up the entire NASCAR race weekend experience, thus extending his stay in America even after his race this Friday. “I want to get out there and experience NASCAR as a whole. The whole weekend. I’m going to stick around and watch all the races and just take it all in. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be pretty wild races out there.”
