The hype concerning the playoffs is now in full motion as the regular season championship came to a thrilling conclusion last week. Martin Truex Jr emerged as the regular season champion, securing the crown for Joe Gibbs Racing. Far from being a snooze fest, the finale at Daytona was a high-stakes race, a do-or-die situation for many, with just one coveted playoff spot remaining.

The Coke Zero Sugar 400 witnessed Chris Buescher and RFK Racing clinching their third win this season. However, the true triumph extended beyond the winner’s circle to the 12th position. Bubba Wallace made his inaugural entry into the playoff season, a career-high was made even more special by the presence of team owner Michael Jordan, offering a stark contrast to the somber moment in the Talladega paddock where Jordan was previously seen.

The 2023 NASCAR season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Wallace, and the story reached its pinnacle at Daytona. Notably, the celebration was shared with basketball Hall of Famer and co-owner of 23XI Racing, Michael Jordan, marking a significant milestone in the form of Wallace’s maiden entry into the playoffs. Simultaneously, it etched a chapter in 23XI Racing’s three-year-young history, with both their cars making a dual entry into the playoffs for the very first time.

The celebratory atmosphere at Daytona presented a poignant contrast to the heart-wrenching events at Talladega earlier in the year. During the Alabama event, Wallace’s #23 Toyota had shone brilliantly, leading the race and appearing destined for victory lane. A special highlight was the steadfast support Wallace received from team owner Michael Jordan, from the garage.

However, the 188-lap race took a dramatic turn, as a last-lap bid to defend against Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney resulted in a critical mishap. Wallace’s daring block maneuver pushed the boundaries but led to his spinning out, dropping from the lead to a disappointing 16th position.

This unexpected turn of events was undoubtedly a bitter pill for any team owner, but especially Jordan considering the $50 million price tag for his journey to Talladega. The extravagant spectacle of a private jet was a fitting illustration, reflecting Jordan’s estimated net worth of $2 billion. During the latest Actions Detrimental podcast, co-owner of the 23XI camp, Denny Hamlin spoke about Jordan’s planned attendance at the race.

“I knew Michael was coming, and certainly he wanted to be a supporter. You know, it’s closer to home, just a hop on a plane to be there. But it was great for him. I kinda saw a couple of other guys that came with him.”

Hamlin also praised the genuine display of camaraderie and appreciation, deeming it an awesome moment. All those guys going up to Bubba and showing appreciation and gratitude for getting that 23 car into the playoffs – it was awesome.”

Denny Hamlin on Wallace’s upward trajectory

During the podcast, Hamlin further directed his message towards Wallace, acknowledging the challenges he had encountered over a demanding three-week period. From navigating the intricate road courses of Indianapolis and Watkins Glen to taming the lightning-fast expanse of the Daytona superspeedway, Wallace’s ability to maintain a lead was admirable.

“And certainly, I wanted to pay my respects as well, to kinda say thank you because he deserves it. Now go out there; you’ve been battle-tested. You went through these last 3 weeks, having to go through 2 road courses and a superspeedway, trying to hold a lead, and you did it,” Hamlin added.
