In a chaotic whirlwind of NASCAR action at Talladega Superspeedway, Kaulig Racing driver Shane van Gisbergen quickly veered from victory to disappointment. Although the weekend began with Gisbergen flaunting his talent, both in Xfinity and the Cup Series, a fuel failure led to a disappointing end for the Chevrolet driver. However, surprisingly, despite all the action on the track, it was Gisbergen’s oblivious interaction with his spotter that stole the show for the fans.

NASCAR fans tease Shane van Gisbergen for his oblivious interaction, the Kiwi calls it a good day

Shane van Gisbergen was seen flaunting his racing moves, and his spotter relayed that Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch was a foot away from him. However, Gisbergen’s reaction to the information took the internet by storm, leaving NASCAR fans in splits. Born and brought up in New Zealand, it looks like van Gisbergen had no idea about the American metric system. Hence, confused by the information passed on by his spotter, the Chevrolet driver replied, “No idea what a foot is.

During the Talladega race, the #97 Wendy Camaro surged to the forefront, momentarily. Having ignited the hopes of a triumphant finish, Gisbergen’s lead soon turned into a massive disappointment as his Chevrolet spluttered to a halt due to fuel depletion. This sent the New Zealand driver tumbling down to the 22nd position.

However, despite the unfortunate chain of events, Shane van Gisbergen faced all the post-race interviews with resilience and optimism. While reflecting on the race, the Chevrolet driver acknowledged the thrill of the battle and how the learning curves are part and parcel of the race.

“Yeah, once I took off it just didn’t go, but it was pretty awesome day, Wendy’s Camaro was good. Later lap was pretty exciting. And battling up the front, I had fun and I felt a lot more comfortable than I have at Daytona for example. And yeah, it was making some moves and instead of just riding and felt really cool.”

Furthermore, the Kaulig Racing driver did not shy away from accepting his mistakes. After explaining how he found the first stage boring, SVG added, “The second stage was the complete opposite. It was madness almost the whole way so that was pretty cool and yeah, just certain points and learning who to work with, who to not. And I made a mistake in stage two thinking someone would follow me they didn’t. And I went straight back so yeah, still learning every lap basically.”

His interaction with the spotter stole the show for the fans, who took to social media to share their views. While one user believed that Gisbergen should learn the metrics before the next race, some others sympathized with the Xfinity driver.

“Gotta make sure he learns about Miles before next week 😂”

Another user drew an analogy with Logan Sargeant, saying, “Oh no, it’s the NASCAR version of the Logan Sargeant “what’s a kilometer” gag that never ends.”

One user even advised him to slow down: “Oh boy! Hang in there SVG.”

Furthermore, as the green flag waved on Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen set off on another day of triumph and learning. While Tyler Reddick clinched the checkered flag and gave Toyota its first Superspeedway win and 23XI its first of the season, Shane van Gisbergen ended up finishing P28.
