Darrell Waltrip, a name synonymous with the very essence of NASCAR racing, turns 77 today. Many fans may remember him by his iconic “Boogity, Boogity, Boogity” catchphrase that enchanted TV viewers for almost two decades in the FOX booth.

The Owensboro, Kentucky native had a career to remember behind the wheel. DW stands out as a bright emblem of NASCAR’s golden era, having raced for some of the sport’s biggest names, including Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Rick Hendrick, and Dale Earnhardt himself, earning an amazing 84 career wins – an impressive feat that has him tied for fourth place on NASCAR’s all-time win tally with the legendary Bobby Allison, and three Cup championships.

However, for many, Darrell Waltrip’s post-racing career as a lead color analyst for Fox Sports is just as legendary. Waltrip retired at the end of the 2000 season and his colorful personality easily helped him transition into the television booth. For nearly two decades, his charm, passion, and extensive knowledge of NASCAR amplified more than 300 Cup telecasts until he stepped down for good in 2019.

As ‘ol DW’ celebrates his 77th birthday, social media platforms erupt with tributes and wishes for the NASCAR icon. Recalling Waltrip’s great legacy, fans swarmed platforms like Reddit & Twitter with nostalgic remarks. A post from Reddit user, u/JumboBrown on NASCAR’s official subreddit acknowledging the legend with a picture of him aptly winning the 1989 Daytona 500 in his iconic white jumpsuit, elicited a range of responses.

“Oh, Darrell, Darrell! You make the Waltrips look like we can’t dance!” wrote a fan, highlighting the essence of Waltrip’s infectious energy.  “There will never be another DW.

I really miss the passion and excitement he gave to the sport every week.”  Another fan replied, highlighting the impact of Waltrip’s unimaginable 60-year-long NASCAR career. Fans showered him with love, their comments echoing through the halls of the internet like the roar of a packed grandstand.

One fan, who discovered NASCAR after Waltrip’s racing days were over, shared, “I love DW. I started watching in the early 2000s, after DW was done racing every weekend… If you watched practice and qualifying and he was on, then you were treated to a bunch of DW stories and really good insight.” This comment reflects the gravity of exactly how long Waltrip has been gracing generations of NASCAR fans with his signature charisma.

As life in the fast lane got slower for Waltrip, he seamlessly transitioned into broadcast, becoming the voice of NASCAR for nearly 20 years. His FOX Sports persona is even being referenced as a character (Darrell Cartrip), alongside his broadcast partner, Jeff Gordon (Jeff Gorvette) in multiple editions of Pixar’s groundbreaking ‘Cars‘ series.

Nevertheless, retirement has not dampened Darrell Waltrip’s passion for racing. Though he admits to missing the action, he finds solace in his post-race analysis from the comfort of his living room. His perspectives, refined during nearly 20 years in the FOX booth and 30 years driving, continue to impact his race-day experience.

He told NASCAR.com in an article on their official website, “I’m opinionated, always have been. I guess in a lot of ways, I’m a perfectionist. And so when you’re a perfectionist, you’re a miserable person all the time because nobody does it the way you would do it, or nobody says what you would say. But I guess that’s part of being a fan. I know so much. I was in the booth for almost 20 years and drove for 30 years before that and I’ve been around racing my whole life. And so I see things and I know things.
