Another day, another development from the NASCAR Chicago Street Course race that takes the sport further away from its essence. This time around, it’s the sound of the racecars. Because as it turns out, the sound is the noise.

And noise is a nuisance. And nuisances have to be dealt with, which is exactly what has happened.

According to Chicago Sun Times, NASCAR has agreed to “limit car noise” when the show comes to downtown Chicago. In order to do that, the Next Gen cars will be running a muffler.

“Our NASCAR Cup Series cars will be running mufflers for this event,” Julie Giese, the President of the event, said. “This is something that has only been done in one other race in an effort to continue to mitigate the sound.”

Naturally, fans were not happy with this update.

Fans bash the Chicago Street Course race after recent muffler development

From the very get-go of the Chicago Street race, many fans had expressed their displeasure and disapproval of the event and various aspects of the event and the compromises NASCAR is making to pull it off.

So of course, with the announcement of the mufflers to deal with the sound, the fans weren’t exactly pleased.

“Seriously, go back to Chicagoland what a bunch of babies.”“Already a flop”“What a cluster. That’s what you get with Chicago.” “Mufflers won’t be needed, majority of the race will be under yellow. #crashfest” “Ironically, the biggest complainers are the ones that already live in a noisy environment”

NASCAR coming to town isn’t bad for Chicago

Apart from the negatives and the criticisms of the race, it’s also worth noting that NASCAR’s street course race could massively benefit the local economy by potentially infusing $113 million.

It’s expected that the races could attract a lot of out-of-town fans, as many as 65,000 of the expected 100,000 spectators.

“For us, being in Chicago is incredibly important,” NASCAR Chicago Street Race President Julie Giese told Sun-Times. “It’s an important market for us from a fan perspective.”

She also claimed the race is “a great opportunity to showcase the city as well as NASCAR.”
